Here's Who Almost Played Michael Scott on 'The Office' & Why He Lost the Part to Steve Carell

Steve Carell played the iconic Michael Scott on The Office and now, fans are being clued in on who almost won the role: Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad star Bob Odenkirk!

“We were circling Bob Odenkirk. He was available. He had a great reputation in the comedy world, and he hadn’t yet become famous. He wasn’t really well known,” one of the producers said in the book “The Office: The Untold Story of the Greatest Sitcom of the 2000s.”

The producer added that “he had an edge to him. His take was as funny as Steve’s, but it was darker…He was a little tougher and meaner.”

So why did the producers go with Steve and not Bob? Apparently, Steve read as more of a “jerk and a douche,” while Bob’s take was more “asshole.”

“The worst thing I have ever had to do ever,” casting agent Allison Jones recalled, “is to tell Bob Odenkirk’s agent that he didn’t get The Office … Believe me, it was a bummer to make that call and I do suspect the show would have worked with Bob Odenkirk.”

“I’m going to blame Seth Rogen,” he said, before revealing that he and the crew actually had a list of curses that Steve could shout during the scene. Kelly‘s name was a “clean” word.

The Real Reason Why Steve Carell Left 'The Office' Is Shocking!

The new book “The Office: The Untold Story of the Greatest Sitcom of the 2000s” reportedly reveals the real reason why Steve Carell decided to leave The Office before the show’s run officially ended.

Boom operator/sound mixer Brian Wittle was interviewed in the book, and he revealed the following tidbit: “I sat with [Carell] one time and he told me the story. He was doing a radio interview and he haphazardly mentioned, almost unconsciously, that it might be his last season. He didn’t plan on saying it out loud and he hadn’t decided anything. Then what he said was the people connected to the show had no reaction to it. They didn’t call and say, ‘What? You wanna leave?’ He said he didn’t get any kind of response from them… When the news broke that he was considering it, the people that are in charge of keeping him there didn’t make a big effort to do so until afterward.”

Hairstylist Kim Ferry also told the same story, saying, “The deadline came for when they were supposed to give him an offer and it passed and they didn’t make him an offer.”

Casting director, Allison Jones, also corroborated this story, adding, “As I recall, he was going to do another season and then NBC, for whatever reason, wouldn’t make a deal with him… Somebody didn’t pay him enough. It was absolutely asinine. I don’t know what else to say about that. Just asinine.”

Steve left his iconic character, Michael Scott, in season 7. One of The Office‘s biggest mysteries was recently revealed in the past few weeks!
