The director of The Kissing Booth 2 is opening up about how they filmed that big dance competition scene at the end and what happened with the extras on set.
In the smash hit Netflix movie, Joey King‘s character Elle enters a dance competition in hopes of winning tuition money for college and she partners up with Marco (Taylor Zakhar Perez), a new kid at school who is also an incredible dancer.
Marco also becomes a threat to Elle’s relationship with Noah (Jacob Elordi), who is off at school at Harvard the entire time.
Writer and director Vince Marcello told Variety, “The concept of the competition being something that would feed her ability to go to Harvard or a higher tuition school became a conflict of that. The guy that is helping her make the money is also the guy threatening her relationship.”
Vince says that Joey and Taylor rehearsed their dance routine in Los Angeles before they filmed it in front of a live audience on set.
“When Marco and Elle came out to shoot that, we had 2500 extras for that shooting day. The second they walked in, that crowd became a full-on audience. They were watching this dance happen with no idea what’s happening in the movie. When Marco and Elle were rehearsing it, the audience was booing because they didn’t want her kissing this other guy. We were backstage and shocked,” Vince revealed. “But after a couple of takes, Jacob arrived, and as soon as he arrived, it was the strangest thing, because it felt like we were watching this moment as he realizes something is going on between them.”
Taylor recently addressed the rumors that he and Joey are now dating in real life.

The 28-year-old actor opened up about his 21-year-old The Kissing Booth 2 co-star on Monday (August 10) on the Chicks in the Office podcast.

“We were quarantine buddies so I would see [King] all the time because we lived five minutes away from each other. We know what our relationship is, we love each other dearly,” he explained.
“It’s been interesting how everyone has been trying to make something out of it but it’s fine. I mean, hey, I would love to be dating Joey King, she’s dope,” he continued.
“I’m a huge fan of dating your friend, someone that you know and you trust because that’s where it all starts right. For me, non-sexual intimacy is so much more important to me at first. I’m all about the sensitive stuff.”
“I’m all about the ROI, what’s the return on investment. If I’m investing this much time into someone I’m gonna be dating, I’m gonna make sure this is more than a three-month thing. I’m more into long-term goal wise when it comes to work and relationships and everything…life’s short and you want to make sure you are spending it with the best people. I’m so much more turned on by emotional intimacy than sexual intimacy at first. I love that,” he went on to say.

Taylor Zakhar Perez is putting dating rumors to rest!
The 28-year-old actor opened up about the whispers of him possibly dating his The Kissing Booth 2 co-star Joey King in an interview with Access on Wednesday (August 5).

During the chat with Access Hollywood‘s Kit Hoover about his sudden rise to fame, he spoke about the attention he’s getting, as well as his character in The Kissing Booth 2. Taylor also confirmed that he’s not dating his co-star, Joey, despite speculation that the two were more than just friends.
“I know, we went away this weekend…everyone kinda freaked about it. We are not dating. We just became really close during filming, but we became even closer after filming because we literally live close to each other…we were kind of each other’s accountability partners during quarantine,” he explained.
He also revealed his favorite thing about Joey: “She can make me cry laugh. She is hysterical…she just cracks me up, and she has this really funny laugh that makes me laugh even more.”

Joey and Taylor both posted the same “road trip” photos to their Instagram Stories that morning and they later shared photos while swimming by a waterfall. Joining them on the trip were Taylor‘s sister Maria and a couple other friends.
Taylor assured fans that they tested negative for COVID-19 before setting off on the getaway!

Joey King has shared a behind-the-scenes clip from the set of The Kissing Booth 2, which shows that the final arcade scene with Elle and Marco wasn’t actually filmed in an arcade!
In the clip, Joey and co-star Taylor Zakhar Perez are dancing on a Dance Dance Revolution machine that is sitting in the middle of a green screen room.
“Dance into the weekend with us AND WATCH THE KISSING BOOTH 2 ON NETFLIX!!! This is the full version that we shot of the final arcade scene with Marco and Elle,” Joey captioned the clip on her Instagram account. “We danced the entire day which was killer on my shin splints but my dance partner made it all worth it. This was a really exhausting day but more fun than anything else. I miss this a lot 🥺❤️”
Joey and Taylor learned the choreography for the dance routine so that they could perform the entire thing from start to finish – in one take!
