'The Handmaid's Tale' Adds Zawe Ashton for Season 4, Plus New Characters Revealed

The Handmaid’s Tale season four is coming in 2021 and a new cast member was just revealed!

Zawe Ashton, best known for her work in the Netflix projects Velvet Buzzsaw and Wanderlust and her work in Broadway’s Betrayal, is joining the cast for season four.

Series creator Bruce Miller told THR that Zawe “is going to play Moira’s girlfriend and an aid worker in Toronto.”

Bruce also talked about Mckenna Grace‘s role in the upcoming season. He said she “plays a young ‘wife,’ in the Gilead tradition. She’s so spectacular in the show. I’ve just been watching the first few episodes because I’m finally doing some editing, and she’s just wonderful. Watching her and [Elisabeth Moss] together, it’s great. June comes in contact with a lot of different people in the season, a lot more than usual, I would say.”

Also, Bruce said that Reed Birney is joining the show as “someone [from the world of] Gilead, who’s unexpectedly not Reed Birney-ish, but it’s been great to be able to build, and over episodes to build characters.”

'The Handmaid's Tale' Gets Renewed for Season 5, Before Season 4 Ever Premieres!

Hulu just announced that The Handmaid’s Tale is going to get a fifth season – and this is before the fourth season even premieres!

The upcoming fourth season of the Emmy-winning series was in production when the coronavirus pandemic hit earlier this year, which forced it to shut down. The season will have 10 episodes, down from the 13 episodes in seasons two and three.

While season four will premiere in 2021, it’s not yet clear when season five will premiere.

THR reports that season four sees “June (Elisabeth Moss) strike back against Gilead as a fierce rebel leader, but the risks she takes bring unexpected and dangerous new challenges. Her quest for justice and revenge threatens to consume her and destroy her most cherished relationships.”

“We’re very grateful to Hulu and MGM that the show will be returning for a fifth season, and especially to our loyal fans for their support,” showrunner Bruce Miller said in a statement. “We are thrilled to be able to continue to tell these stories, with our incredible cast and crew, and can’t wait to be back on the air with season four next year.”

Mckenna Grace Joins 'Handmaid's Tale' Season 4 as a Child Bride

Mckenna Grace has joined the cast of The Handmaid’s Tale season four and you might be disturbed when you find out the role she will be playing.

The 14-year-old actress will play the recurring role of “Mrs. Keyes, a sharply intelligent, teenaged wife of a much older Commander who rules her farm and household with confidence. She has a rebellious, subversive streak, and is calm and pious on the outside with turmoil, even insanity, on the inside,” Deadline reports.

The fourth season of the Hulu series was only a couple of weeks into filming when it had to shut down due to the pandemic, but the production picked up again two weeks ago in Toronto.

Elisabeth Moss will be making her directorial debut with the third episode of the season.

Mckenna is best known for her roles in movies like Captain Marvel, I, Tonya, Annabelle Comes Home, Troop Zero, and Gifted.
