The director of The Kissing Booth 2 is opening up about how they filmed that big dance competition scene at the end and what happened with the extras on set.
In the smash hit Netflix movie, Joey King‘s character Elle enters a dance competition in hopes of winning tuition money for college and she partners up with Marco (Taylor Zakhar Perez), a new kid at school who is also an incredible dancer.
Marco also becomes a threat to Elle’s relationship with Noah (Jacob Elordi), who is off at school at Harvard the entire time.
Writer and director Vince Marcello told Variety, “The concept of the competition being something that would feed her ability to go to Harvard or a higher tuition school became a conflict of that. The guy that is helping her make the money is also the guy threatening her relationship.”
Vince says that Joey and Taylor rehearsed their dance routine in Los Angeles before they filmed it in front of a live audience on set.
“When Marco and Elle came out to shoot that, we had 2500 extras for that shooting day. The second they walked in, that crowd became a full-on audience. They were watching this dance happen with no idea what’s happening in the movie. When Marco and Elle were rehearsing it, the audience was booing because they didn’t want her kissing this other guy. We were backstage and shocked,” Vince revealed. “But after a couple of takes, Jacob arrived, and as soon as he arrived, it was the strangest thing, because it felt like we were watching this moment as he realizes something is going on between them.”
The 21-year-old actress made a virtual appearance on SiriusXM’s The Howard Stern Show on Tuesday morning (August 11) and opened up about the film.
Howard is actually a massive fan of The Kissing Booth film franchise and says that Joey is his favorite actress!
After Jacob claimed he hasn’t seen The Kissing Booth 2, Joey tweeted, “Jacob watched it. He’s capping.” The tweet was deleted shortly after and she’s explaining why.
“I said, ‘Jacob watched it. He’s capping.’ Which, ‘capping’ means lying. I head the term ‘capping’ on like Tik Tok and Twitter and Instagram, through friends, and I was like ‘I guess this is the new thing.’ Apparently its not. It’s something I should not have used as a white person. I took it down… two accounts on Twitter called me out for it, that’s why I deleted it. People thought it was because I was like ‘oh no I shouldn’t have said that about him’ so I deleted it because of that,” Joey said.
She continued, “The tweet was a jovial thing. It wasn’t to be mean—it really wasn’t. I know the The Kissing Booth fans they are always so curious about that tension of sorts and so I was like I’m just going to, I know they will appreciate it and that’s who it was for.”
“I did get his permission to tweet it so that was fine,” Joey added. “He had a good sense of humor about that tweet, for sure.”
FYI: Joey is wearing a SAVÀ skirt, a Princess Polly top, Jennifer Zeuner earrings and colored rings, a Versace chain necklace and Stella Bow’s I Am A Voter pendant necklace.
The 23-year-old Aussie actor, who plays Noah Flynn in the Netflix movies, says that he still hasn’t seen The Kissing Booth 2, despite it being the number one film on the streaming service for weeks.
“I haven’t seen it. You’ve seen more than I have. I don’t know if I’m allowed to say that, but I haven’t,” Jacob said in a new interview with Variety. He then asked the reporter if she honestly liked the film.
“Yeah, it was cute… I thought it was better than the first one,” the reporter said. Jacob replied, “That’s so kind of you.”
