Toni Collette Cast Opposite Colin Firth in HBO Max's Crime Drama 'The Staircase'

Toni Collette is taking on an exciting new project.

The 48-year-old actress is joining the cast of HBO Max’s upcoming limited drama series The Staircase, per Deadline.

The eight-episode series focuses on the life of Michael Peterson, played by Colin Firth, and his expansive North Carolina family as well as the mysterious death of his wife, Kathleen.

Toni will play Kathleen in the show, which is based on the numerous books and reports about the case.

Michael Peterson was convicted of the murder of his wife in 2001. He had initially claimed that Kathleen died from falling down the stairs after consuming alcohol and Valium, but an autopsy found that she died from multiple injuries, including blunt force trauma to the back of her head. His charge was eventually reduced to manslaughter in 2017 and he was released from prison.

The Staircase is partially based on the true-crime docuseries of the same name which premiered in 2004 and was released on Netflix as a 13-episode series in 2018.

Anna Kendrick holds on tight while falling through space in the first trailer for Netflix’s upcoming Stowaway.

The first trailer comes just a day after the first look pics debuted.

Alongside Anna, the upcoming movie also stars Daniel Dae Kim, Toni Collette, and Shamier Anderson and will debut on Thursday, April 22.

Here is the synopsis: “On a mission headed to Mars, an unintended stowaway accidentally causes severe damage to the spaceship’s life support systems. Facing dwindling resources and a potentially fatal outcome, the crew is forced to make an impossible decision.”

“The thing that feels really relevant is less the isolation of it and more that kind of problem-solving part of your brain that we were all engaging so vigorously in the first couple months of the pandemic,” Anna shared with EW about the relevancy of the film. “Just that constant problem-solving of, ‘wait, okay, how do we fix this?’ And just when it seems like you’re onto something, there’s some very obvious fundamental problem.”

“It was so simple and so lean, but totally compelling,” Anna said. Toni added, “I had never really read anything like it. It is contained and the characters are confined but the questions posed, moral and otherwise, are vast and wide open.”

Anna was asked if she’d ever go to Mars if she were given the opportunity. She said, “Never. Not ever, not in a million years. Never, never, never, never, never, never. I would do a lot of things… I would skydive. I would get a neck tattoo before I’d go to space.”
