Padma Lakshmi Calls Out Colorism In Beauty Ads Targeted at People Of Color

Padma Lakshmi is taking issue with beauty ads that are directed a people of color, which emphasize that a fair complexion is lovely, but a darker is not.

“For years I‘ve been saying that ‘Fair & Lovely’ needs to pack their fake cosmetics and GO!!” the 49-year-old author wrote on Twitter. “Anyone else out there sick and tired of being told that fair=lovely? Because I sure as hell am.”

Padma continued, “I’ve been hearing that crap since my girlhood and it did a number on my self-esteem.”

She also shared a clip of what the Fair and Lovely ad looks like for those who didn’t know and shows one woman recommending a product and measuring just how “fair” her skin tone is.
