Noel Clarke Suspended by BAFTA Amid Misconduct Allegations

Noel Clarke is suspended.

The British Academy of Film and Television made the decision to suspend 45-year-old Kidulthood UK film and TV actor, director and producer Noel Clarke following an expose in The Guardian on Thursday (April 29) including allegations of inappropriate behavior from more than 20 women.

“In light of the allegations of serious misconduct regarding Noel Clarke in The Guardian this evening, BAFTA has taken the decision to suspend his membership and the Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema award immediately and until further notice,” the organization said in a statement, via Deadline.

The article features testimony from a variety of women from the film and TV industries alleging instances of misconduct, from inappropriate touching to secretly filming an actress naked during an audition. He firmly denies the allegations.

Only two weeks ago, he received BAFTA’s Outstanding British Contribution To Cinema award, which the organization now says is also suspended.

The article also claims that BAFTA was aware of the allegations prior to giving him the award, and decided to go ahead despite the article coming out.

“In a 20-year career, I have put inclusivity and diversity at the forefront of my work and never had a complaint made against me. If anyone who has worked with me has ever felt uncomfortable or disrespected, I sincerely apologise. I vehemently deny any sexual misconduct or wrongdoing and intend to defend myself against these false allegations,” he said in a statement to The Guardian.
