Laverne Cox's Role in 'Promising Young Woman' Was Dubbed By Men in European Versions of the Movie

Fans of Laverne Cox might not have seen any of the European versions of Promising Young Woman, but if they did, they’d notice something really off about her character.

In one version that was due to be released in Italy, titled Una Donna Promettente there, a clip was released to promote the film, and it was then where fans realized something was up.

Instead of Laverne‘s voice or a female one at all, it was replaced by a male voice instead.

According to People, provisions have now been put in place to make sure the same thing will not happen in any of Laverne‘s future films.

Universal Pictures International also put out a statement regarding the voice.

“We are deeply grateful to Laverne and the transgender community for opening our eyes to a bias that neither we nor many in our industry recognized. While there was no malicious intent behind this mistake, we are working diligently to fix it. We have begun redubbing Ms. Cox’s voice with female actors in our international territories and are pushing back release dates to ensure the correct version is available,” the company stated. “We are sorry for the pain caused but are thankful that we can address the situation on this film and prevent similar mistakes from happening again on future projects.”

The company is also vowing to pull and then, re-dub, other European versions of the movie in countries like Spain and Germany. Laverne has yet to comment about the situation.

Promising Young Woman has actually been one of the top-grossing movies of the pandemic. See the full list here…
