Ricky Martin 'Felt Violated' by Infamous Barbara Walters Interview Two Decades Later

Ricky Martin is reflecting on a tough time.

The 49-year-old superstar reflect on his interview in 2000 with Barbara Walters, in which she asked about his sexuality, during a chat with People.

In the issue, Ricky revealed that he was not prepared to answer the question at the time amid speculation about his sexuality.

“When she dropped the question, I felt violated because I was just not ready to come out. I was very afraid. There’s a little PTSD with that,” he admitted.

“I think that sexuality is something that each individual should deal with in their own way, and that’s all I have to say about that,” he said during the interview when asked about the rumors of him being gay. When she pushed him to outright answer, he said: “I just don’t feel like it.”

“Well, maybe I would have come out in that interview. It would’ve been great because when I came out, it just felt amazing. When it comes to my sexuality, when it comes to who I am, I want to talk about what I’m made of, about everything that I am. Because if you hide it, it’s a life-or-death situation,” he reflected to People.

Barbara since expressed her regret for pressuring him to answer on the spot.

“A lot of people say that destroyed his career, and when I think back on it now I feel it was an inappropriate question,” she said years ago.
