Chip & Joanna Gaines Open Up About The Diversity Featured On Their Magnolia Network

Joanna and Chip Gaines are opening up in a new, in-depth interview with The Hollywood Reporter, ahead of their television network, Magnolia Network, launching.

The married couple and parents to five talked about facing hurtful criticism head on.

Most of the criticism stems from their HGTV show, Fixer Upper, never featuring a same sex couple and how the show featured a conversation with a local pastor who has openly denounced LGBTQ rights.

“The accusations that get thrown at you, like you’re a racist or you don’t like people in the LGBTQ community, that’s the stuff that really eats my lunch — because it’s so far from who we really are. That’s the stuff that keeps me up.”

Joanna and Chip are also addressing diversity on their upcoming network, and revealed that while the core audience is likely to be female and white, many series are fronted by people of color.

“As an American white male, it’s hard to be perfectly diverse,” Chip shares. “In our own company, we’ve got nearly 700 employees, and one of our biggest passions is making this group represent all people.”

Chip and Joanna added of the network, “We can’t stop cable from dying, that’s not our mission, but while it’s still available, we hope you spend an hour or five with us and leave feeling like it was time well spent.”
