'Hillbilly Elegy' Author JD Vance's Campaign Sign Falls Off as He Announces Senate Bid

JD Vance, the author of the book “Hillbilly Elegy” and the subject of the Netflix movie of the same name, had an unfortunate moment during his big announcement.

The 36-year-old venture capitalist announced on Thursday (July 1) that he has joined the race for the open Senate seat in Ohio. He is running for the Republican primary and it’s a crowded field.

“There has never been a Republican primary for statewide office in Ohio this wide open and this chaotic,” a Republican strategist told CNN. “Each one of these candidates has their own claim to the Republican base.”

During his announcement event, JD was about to reveal his candidacy when his sign fell off the lectern. A video of the moment is already going viral on Twitter.

“I think we need people in Washington who are fighters — and not just fighters, but smart fighters. There are a lot of fighters in Washington, D.C. They just fight for the wrong things,” he said. JD added that the Senate needs someone “who knows how the system works, who knows how to reform that system and who can make this country better.”
