Michael Jackson's Estate Slams 'Leaving Neverland' Doc

There are some shocking claims about Michael Jackson made in the new documentary Leaving Neverland, which just debuted at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival.

The film details molestation accusations made by Wade Robson and James Safechuck, who say Michael sexually abused them when they were children. You can head over to TMZ to read some of the shocking allegations.

MJ‘s estate is calling the documentary, which will premiere on HBO in the spring, “one-sided.”

Leaving Neverland isn’t a documentary, it is the kind of tabloid character assassination Michael Jackson endured in life, and now in death,” the estate’s statement read (via TheWrap). “The film takes uncorroborated allegations that supposedly happened 20 years ago and treats them as fact. These claims were the basis of lawsuits filed by these two admitted liars which were ultimately dismissed by a judge. The two accusers testified under oath that these events never occurred. They have provided no independent evidence and absolutely no proof in support of their accusations, which means the entire film hinges solely on the word of two perjurers.”

“By choosing not to include any of these independent voices who might challenge the narrative that he was determined to sell, the director neglected fact checking so he could craft a narrative so blatantly one-sided that viewers never get anything close to a balanced portrait,” the estate said. “Conveniently left out of Leaving Neverland was the fact that when Robson was denied a role in a Michael Jackson themed Cirque du Soleil production, his assault allegations suddenly emerged.”

Shocking Michael Jackson Documentary 'Leaving Neverland' Premieres at Sundance 2019

Michael Jackson documentary Leaving Neverland just premiered during Sundance Film Festival and viewers had an emotional response.

The four-hour documentary chronicled allegations of child molestation against the late superstar, focusing on victims Wade Robson and James Safechuck.

The two men, now both in their late 30s, described their relationship with Michael starting when they were seven and 10-years-old and featured personal photos, audio messages and notes.

According to TMZ, the first half focused on the men’s testimonies while the second followed Michael‘s case and trial.

During the screening, Daily Beast editor Kevin Fallon wrote, “On a 10-min break halfway through Sundance’s 4-hour Michael Jackson child sex abuse documentary. Whatever you thought you knew or were aware of, the content of this is more disturbing than you could imagine.”

Variety added, “In Leaving Neverland, the testimony of Robson and Safechuck is overwhelmingly powerful and convincing. And one reason it’s more powerful than anything we’ve previously encountered on the subject…is that the two don’t just describe the sexual activities that Jackson subjected them to (oral sex, mutual masturbation, the viewing of porn). They describe, in abundantly articulate and deeply emotional detail, how the abuse took place within the context of what appeared (to them) to be a relationship of hypnotic warmth and trust.”

Following the critical reviews, Michael‘s fans also took to Twitter to defend him.
