Jessica Chastain has been a major supporter of Hillary Clinton throughout the election and one thing she wants fans to know after the election is that she will still fight for women’s rights.
The two-time Oscar-nominated actress took to Instagram to share a story from her childhood to explain her stance.
“When I was a little girl I remember visiting my great grandmother in Kansas. I remember her saying that women shouldn’t drive. She said that ‘we just make mistakes and then get ripped off’. Little did I know how profoundly that statement would effect me,” Jessica said. “I also remember a few years later when my teacher asked about a women running as the VP of the United States. No one in my class voted for her. I raised my hand to explain why, ‘only a man can do that job’. We need to take care of our girls. Systematic sexism is hard to fight. It brainwashes women in society into thinking that they’re less than men. We can grow up to think that a woman doesn’t deserve more. That they have no rights to their bodies. That they shouldn’t speak up. That they shouldn’t even think of reporting that rape. When you’re a women you think that no one will believe you.”
“I’m here to say that I believe you. I will fight for you everyday of my life. I will support you as you ask for equal pay. I will applaud as you step forward in this world and inspire others with your power. No matter the color of your skin, or where in the world you live, I am here. And I love you as my own flesh,” she added.
