Ava DuVernay Joins Her 'When They See Us' Cast at Netflix FYC Event!

Ava DuVernay keeps it bright in green while hitting the red carpet at the premiere For Your Consideration event for her Netflix series When They See Us held at the Paramount Theater on the Paramount Studios lot on Sunday (August 11) in Hollywood.

The 46-year-old writer-director-producer stepped out in support of the series, which is about the Central Park Five, and has been the most watched series on Netflix for each of the days it has been available.

Ava joined the cast Jharell Jerome, Niecy Nash, Marsha Stephanie Blake, Asante Blackk, Aunjanue Ellis, Ethan Herisse and Caleel Harris, as well as composer Kris Bowers.

On what made her the most scared of getting wrong while portraying the Exonerated Five in When They See Us: “Just the men — it was really just the men. My mission every single day — in the writing, the direction, every line of dialogue that I wrote, every choice — I wanted the guys to love it,” Ava recently expressed (via Variety). “I want them to feel like it’s really them; I want them to look at this and be proud and let their stories be told that were taken from them at 14 years old and they were never able to get back. For all those years, people thought they were one thing that they weren’t, and so I just wanted them to look at me and say, ‘You did it.’ And they watched it, and when it was over, the lights came up and they all turned around and looked at me. Their eyes were bloodshot red and soaked, and they encircled me. I was just in the middle of all of them, and they hugged me, and we all cried. And they said, ‘You did it.’ It was beyond what they thought it could be. So honestly, what else do you need?”

Oprah Winfrey Presents 'When They See Us' at Netflix’s FYSEE!

Oprah Winfrey and Ava DuVernay happily strike a pose with the guys of the limited series When They See Us held during Netflix’s FYSEE at Raleigh Studios on Sunday (June 9) in Los Angeles.

The special event marked the first time executive producer Oprah interviewed The Exonerated Five – Antron McCray, Korey Wise, Kevin Richardson, Raymond Santana and Yusef Salaam.

Oprah sat down with the exonerated men behind When They See Us and discussed the ongoing cycles of racism and injustice in our country, and the need for change.

Based on a true story that gripped the country, When They See Us, which premieres on June 12, chronicles the notorious case of five teenagers of color, labeled the Central Park Five, who were convicted of a rape they did not commit. The four-part limited series focuses on the five teenagers from Harlem. Beginning in the spring of 1989, when the teenagers were first questioned about the incident, the series spans 25 years, highlighting their exoneration in 2002 and the settlement reached with the city of New York in 2014.

'When They See Us': Why Ava DuVernay Didn't Cast a Donald Trump Character

Ava DuVernay looks stunning on the cover of The Hollywood Reporter‘s latest issue!

Here’s what the 46-year-old director, mogul, and activist had to share with the mag:

On why [Donald] Trump will only appear via news footage and was not cast in her Central Park Five Netflix miniseries When They See Us: “I decided I was telling the story of the men. They knew a rich, kind of bloated, flamboyant guy who owned buildings across town had said something about them. They were much more concerned with their families and their lives than some guy in a golden tower.”

On why Trump was involved to begin with: “It made him feel like a player and important. Press conferences ensued. He was on CNN. Those are all the things that we know he wanted at that time. By doing this, he got quite a bit of attention, and still is getting it for doing the same kinds of things. I don’t think it was for any real desire to seek justice for Trisha Meili, because if he did feel that way he would have sought it for [Brett Kavanaugh accuser] Christine Blasey Ford. It was an opportunity, and he’s an opportunist.”

On her hopes for series star Jharrel Jerome (Moonlight): “My prayer for Jharrel is, may opportunities come for this young black man in the ways that they come for Ansel Elgort.”

On viewing misreported facts on the case back in 1989, as a teenager: “Sometimes ‘wilin’ out’ just means you’re hanging out. Sometimes it means you’re out just having fun. It certainly doesn’t mean you’re raping people. The fact that wilin’ became wilding, became wolf pack, became these boys are animals. … I remember for the first time realizing that the news might not be true, that the news is something that you have to really think about and question.”
