Bryan Cranston Defends Playing Paraplegic Man in 'The Upside'

Bryan Cranston is speaking out to defend his role in the new movie The Upside, in which he plays a paraplegic billionaire.

The 62-year-old actor addressed people who questioned why the role didn’t go to a disabled actor instead of Cranston, who is able-bodied.

“The real business dynamic of that is the choice of the studios to try to see if they can make an investment into a film that could bring a return, so that wasn’t part of my decision making,” Bryan told Yahoo UK. “But I think it points out the lack of diversity in disabled actors and the lack of opportunity in order to be even considered to play the lead role in a film like this.”

“Are there any actors who have reached any kind of star status to be able to be considered? I think by not coming up with an answer to that is the answer to that. There is a dearth of opportunity for actors with a disability,” he added.

Bryan also addressed the issue in an interview with the British Press Association.

“As actors we’re asked to play other people,” he said. “If I, as a straight, older person, and I’m wealthy, I’m very fortunate, does that mean I can’t play a person who is not wealthy? Does that mean I can’t play a homosexual?”

“We live in the world of criticism; if we’re willing to get up and try something, we have to also be willing to take criticism. We’re very aware of the need to expand the opportunities for people with disabilities,” he also said, according to Sky News. “I don’t know, where does the restriction apply, where is the line for that?”

Bryan Cranston Reveals What Makes Him 'Mad as Hell' on 'The Late Show'!

Bryan Cranston appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Monday (December 10) and spoke up about what makes him “mad as hell.”

The 62-year-old actor, who is currently starring in a stage adaptation of the Oscar-winning 1976 film Network, described how prevalent the script from screenwriter Paddy Chayefsky is today after 40 years.

“It is something that brings you back to the 1970s and ships you back into 2018 quickly,” Bryan expressed. “So a lot of things that we discuss, you know, in the show about being addicted to whatever the modern technology is at the time… or how about ‘fake news,’ that’s an element we deal with. And the manipulation of audiences by having a news outlet having an agenda of what their audience [listens] to. It’s really, very prescient from what he was writing.”

Bryan then revealed that the line “I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore” made famous by Peter Finch, who went on to win the Oscar, wasn’t actually the line as written by Paddy. In fact, it was originally, “I’m as mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore.”

“I think what makes me angry is people accepting duplicity and the diminishment of integrity and lack of accountability that we’re finding now in our society,” Bryan added when Stephen asked about what makes him “mad as hell.”

Is Bryan Cranston's Walter White in the 'Breaking Bad' Movie? Here's What He Said!

News broke this week that there’s a Breaking Bad movie in the works, with Vince Gilligan, the creator of the show, expected to write the script and direct.

At the time the news became public, it was unclear if the show’s stars Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul would be involved in the movie.

Bryan made an appearance on The Dan Patrick Show and addressed if we could be seeing Walter White again.

“Yes, there appears to be a movie version of Breaking Bad. But I, honestly have not even read the script. So I couldn’t tell you,” he said. “I have not gotten the script. I had not read the script, so there’s a question of whether we’d even see Walter White in this movie! Think about that one.”

The AMC series ran from 2008-2013, and was critically acclaimed and lauded at awards shows.
