The 45-year-old Joker actor was seen out and about running errands on Sunday (August 16) in Los Angeles.

Joaquin kept it comfy in a black tee with matching shorts and Converse sneakers while out grabbing an envelope, wearing a mask amid the pandemic.

Joaquin Phoenix was at the heart of a hostage situation in Ukraine today, Deadline reports.

According to the site, a man named Maksym Kryvosh took thirteen people hostage with a grenade and guns on a bus, which resulted in a 12-hour standoff with police officers.

Maksym is a known animal rights activist, who also has a criminal record for gun possesion, and one of his demands in order to release the hostages was for the country to promote Earthlings, a 2005 documentary which Joaquin narrated.

Joaquin‘s film is directed by Shaun Monson and exposed the suffering endured by animals at factory farms, research labs, puppy mills and more.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy agreed to Maksym‘s request and shared a six-second clip from the movie on the presidential Facebook page. The clip was deleted almost immediately after it played.

Joaquin is also known for his animal rights activism. After winning at the Oscars, he went straight to save a baby calf from slaughter.

In a recent interview with Variety to celebrate Gladiator‘s 20th anniversary, Russell Crowe opened up about his friendship with Joaquin that started when they worked on the movie together.

“There were a lot of people in that strange journalistic habit who wanted to just poke that fire and kept asking Joaquin about his brother and then about his relationship with me because we have that in the film,” Russell shared with the site, recalling the press tour that took place.

He added that “he just said something along the lines of, ‘Look, Russell treated me like a brother’ and it just hit me in a really heavy way.”

“The last time we got together we had just bumped into each other in a corridor and it was then followed by six or seven hours of just throwing away whatever it was we were supposed to do that day and just being in each other’s company,” Russell added.

He spoke about his failed comic book movie, Batman: Year One, and revealed he wanted Joaquin to play the title character.

“The studio wanted Freddie Prinze Jr and I wanted Joaquin Phoenix. I remember thinking, ‘Uh oh, we’re making two different films here.’ That’s a true story. It was a different time. The Batman I wrote was definitely a way different type of take than they ended up making,” he said.

He said he was envisioning the movie to be like ’70s crime films like Death Wish and Taxi Driver.

“The Batman that was out before me was Batman & Robin, the famous one with the nipples on the Batsuit, so I was really trying to undermine that, and reinvent it. That’s where my head went.”

Joaquin recently opened up about the scary moment that led to him checking into rehab years ago.
