Ana de Armas Reveals She Almost Passed on Starring in 'Knives Out'

Ana de Armas was this close to not starring in Knives Out!

During a new interview with Flaunt, the 32-year-old actress revealed that she almost passed on playing Marta in the movie.

When she was first asked to audition, Ana said that her character was being described as “Latina, caretaker, pretty” and she assumed that Marta would just be branded as a stereotypical Latina character.

“Things could have been very different,” Ana shared. “I really pay attention to what that little description is. I’m sure whoever did it wasn’t thinking about what that meant but for me, I was just like, ‘Oh no, I’m not doing this!’ What do you mean—caretaker, Latina, pretty?’”

“I’m very proud of being Cuban and being Latina and I will play the most Latina any Latina has ever played Latina. But it also doesn’t interest me that much, all the time,” Ana continued. “It gets very boring, very quickly and I want to do other things… and even if you’re playing a Latina, not all Latinas are the same… I want to think and believe that I can play anybody, anywhere in the world because the stories I want to tell are universal. I want to be able to tell any story.”

Despite the original description, Knives Out was able to show that Marta was no stereotypical character, and Ana‘s portrayal earned her her first Golden Globe nomination.

Also in the interview, Ana opened up about fame as affected her.

'Knives Out' Twitter Blocked Ana de Armas' Fan Page - See What Happened Next!

Ana de Armas‘ infamous fan page on Twitter has been blocked by the Knives Out official page on Twitter!

You might remember that back in April, Ana blocked the fan page after the account posted some humorous tweets about her many public outings with boyfriend Ben Affleck.

Well, on Monday (July 6), the fan page noticed that the Twitter account for Ana‘s movie Knives Out had also blocked them.

“BREAKING: The official Knives Out film twitter account has also blocked us!” they tweeted with a screenshot of the block.

The Knives Out page then tweeted out, “Thank god @ArmasUpdates can’t read this.” They took things another step further by reporting an issue against the fan page.

Twitter asked, “Help us understand the problem. What issue with @ArmasUpdates are you reporting?” The Knives Out page selected, “I’m not interested in this account.”

A big star even tweeted his interest in the feud.

“I have to write it! Do you have any ideas?” he joked when asked about the plot of the new sequel.

He confirmed Daniel Craig will be back as Benoit Blanc.

“In my mind, I don’t even think of it in terms of a sequel…ever since we started working on this, I was like, look, if we can keep this going the same way Agatha Christie wrote a bunch of Poirot novels and do that with Blanc and keep making mysteries. Whole new cast, Whole new location, whole new mystery…there’s so many different things you can do with it,” he said.

When asked where it would be set, he simply joked: “Space.”

During the call, he said a sequel to the Rian Johnson-directed movie is “officially a go,” hinting at an “imminent” production start for a follow-up film.

“I had such a good time making it, such a great time working with Daniel [Craig], and now just seeing that audiences are responding to it, the idea of continuing it on seems like it would just be a blast. But there’s a lot that has to happen before that can happen, first and foremost being writing a script. So, we’ll see,” Rian said previously to Deadline of the film’s sequel possibilities.

'Knives Out' Star Ana de Armas Originally Turned Down Her Audition for This Reason

Ana de Armas might not be most well-known star in the movie Knives Out, but she plays the central character in the new murder mystery… though she almost didn’t audition for the film!

The 31-year-old actress turned down an audition for the Rian Johnson movie because the character description for Marta simply said, “pretty Latina caretaker.”

“I’m like, ‘Latina again, really? No! I am not doing this,’” Ana told THR.

She added in a separate interview, “Getting an email that described the character like that — without any more information or a script attached because it was high-profile and secret — just really didn’t speak to me. Latinas rarely exist at the center of a film, especially not in the context that we have in this movie. So, because of the character description, my imagination immediately went to a portrayal that was not necessarily very positive or exciting in relation to Latin culture. So, when I finally read the script, I realized that the description didn’t fit at all because Marta is so much more than that.”

The star-studded Knives Out cast also features Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis, Don Johnson, Toni Collette, Katherine Langford, Christopher Plummer, and more.
