Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch Musical! is airing RIGHT NOW on NBC – and viewers have a lot to say about it!

Leading the cast is Matthew Morrison in the role as The Grinch, looking almost unrecognizable in all that makeup and the infamous green costume. He also revealed how long it took him to get all dressed up as The Grinch.

While watching the show, fans had some very interesting opinions about this updated version of the iconic Christmas story.

One thing a lot of people seem to be talking about on Twitter is how Matthew (as The Grinch) often breaks the fourth wall and talks directly into the camera.

“When Matthew Morrison started speaking directly to the camera my soul left my body #GrinchMusical,” one person tweeted.

A lot of people said that this version of The Grinch is exactly what they’d expect to happen in the crazy year that is 2020.

“Would we expect anything else from the #GrinchMusical during 2020?” another fan tweeted.

Matthew Morrison is starring as The Grinch in Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch Musical tonight on NBC and in a new interview, opened up about wearing the iconic green costume for the event.

The former Glee star referenced Jim Carrey, who starred as the character in full length movie and once compared putting on the costume and makeup to torture.

In fact, Jim even opened up about going through torture training because of the costume.

“I can’t imagine being Jim Carrey and doing an actual movie of this, having to day in and day out for months on end put that face on,” Matthew shared with EW. “I had to put the whole outfit on maybe five times. But it took three and a half hours to put on and an hour to take off.”

Matthew added that his costume was “a little inhibiting, if I’m honest, just because you don’t want to move your face too much because the prosthetic might fall off.”

“I’m singing and dancing in this, and I’m a sweater and that messes with a lot of makeup things as well,” he continued. “…You’re the Grinch, you’re green. I now have so much respect for any woman who has ever played Elphaba [in Wicked]. Having to go through that every night, oh my gosh!”

Matthew also revealed that wearing the costume was challenging because of the weight attached to it.

“We had some brilliant costume designers, and they did the best job that they possibly could to make it as light as it was,” he says. “But it was still pretty heavy. If I was ever to lose weight on a project, this was the one. I took that thing off every day, and besides the smell of it, it was just like, covered with sweat.”

The first look at the 42-year-old Glee actor in his costume was released on Thanksgiving Day and the reactions weren’t too kind.

For those that don’t know, the musical premiered on Broadway during the 2006 holiday season and now a stage version was filmed in London with Matthew in the title role.

The event will be a two-hour production of the stage show, filmed at the Troubadour Theatre in London. Denis O’Hare will be playing old Max while Booboo Stewart is set to play young Max.

Dr. Seuss’ beloved book tells the story of a reclusive Grinch who plotted from his cave atop snowy Mt. Crumpit to steal Christmas from the Whos in Who-ville. Then on Christmas Eve, disguised as Santa Claus and enlisting his loyal dog Max as a reindeer, the Grinch traveled to Who-ville to scoop up the Whos’ gifts and decorations. Much to his surprise on Christmas morning, the Whos were unfazed and celebrated the holiday with a heartwarming display of joy and love.

NBC is launching Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch Musical this December – and The Grinch has just been announced!

The network revealed that Matthew Morrison will be leading the two-hour holiday special, which will air on December 9 at 8 p.m. ET.

American Horror Story‘s Denis O’Hare plays an older version of Max, with Descendants actor Booboo Stewart playing a younger version. The Lost Girls actress Amelia Minto will star as Cindy Lou Who, People confirmed.

The rest of the cast, including a child Max, has yet to be announced.

The musical will be broadcast from the Troubadour Theatre in London, United Kingdom.

“While the pandemic presents some challenges in bringing the stage musical to life, we are putting together a really special show with some crazy, fun, imaginative things going on,” Matthew Morrison said.

“Dr. Seuss is an indelible part of all of our lives and we’re thrilled to bring a stage production of The Grinch Musical! to our audience. This is a perfect addition to our annual holiday program traditions and a telecast the entire family will enjoy,” said NBC’s Doug Vaughan.

NBC also just announced this scheduling switch-up.

Matthew Morrison is looking back at his time on set with Glee co-star Naya Rivera, over two months after she tragically passed away from drowning.

The 41-year-old actor spoke to ET while promoting his work with Keep Music Alive, a music education non-profit organization.

“Naya was a huge bright light,” Matthew said. “I mean, she’s someone who kind of kept us in stitches on set, like, she was always the one who is just so witty and just, like, always joking. On that show, it was difficult. We pulled long, long hours — like 16 to 18 hour days — and we needed that, that team morale, and she was always there to give us a good laugh.”

“It’s crazy saying ‘was,’” he continued. “But she was a special person and my heart just goes out to that family who is grieving. I can’t imagine, you know, having a son myself, the upbringing that that child is going to be exposed to because his mother is not there, you know? It’s gotta be so tough, so my heart goes out to that family.”

Someone very close to Naya just moved in with her ex-husband to raise her son.

Matthew Morrison is penning a touching tribute about his former Glee co-star Naya Rivera.

“Naya was a such a powerful force, in both her personal life and in her work. While so many of us were trying to find our voice, Naya’s was clear and resolute. When she spoke, you would embrace every last word. And when she sang, she would let you into her soul. Glee acted as only a snippet of her life that we all, thankfully, had the honor of witnessing,” he posted on his Instagram.

Matthew continued, “But Naya would shine brightest when surrounded by her wonderful family. A common passion we both shared recently was that of our roles as parents. Naya was fervent about motherhood and had a steadfast love for Josey. It is that powerful love that ensures us that her story does not end here. I’m confident that her positive influence will be continuously felt, and that her beautiful spirit will carry on in the lives of so many. I’m devastated by this immense loss. This week has been long and trying with much praying and hope. I find some solace in closure, but the pain I feel for her and her family cannot be measured. Rest in peace, keep shining down on us with your bright light.”

Investigators revealed the devastating way that they believe Naya died and what she did in her final moments was truly heroic.
