'Star Trek' Screenwriter Teases 'Fun' R-Rated Script With Quentin Tarantino & Chris Pine

Quentin Tarantino‘s co-screenwriter Mark L. Smith has opened up a bit about the R-rated Star Trek movie that has been in the works with Chris Pine.

The 56-year-old director has previously shared his plans for a Star Trek movie, and revealed as of December 2019, that he was thinking about walking away from it.

“I might be steering away from it, but we’ll see,” Quentin had said. “I haven’t completely decided, or talked to anyone involved. Nothing is official.”

However, Mark shared with SFX magazine that it might not be the case at all.

“I wrote a Star Trek with Tarantino, and that was a sci-fi script on which I could have fun and lean into some bigger, broader things,” Mark shared with the magazine.

He added that “Kirk is always just so fun. Tarantino and I had so much fun with him, because Kirk is just William Shatner, y’know? It’s like: you’re not sure who is who, so you can kinda lean into that. Because you watch Chris Pine and he’s playing Kirk, but he’s also playing William Shatner a touch.”

Previously, Quentin opened up about his want to venture into the fantasy franchise, after he had watched J.J. Abrams‘ 2009 film.

“I thought Chris Pine did a fantastic job not just playing Capt. Kirk but playing William Shatner’s captain — he is William Shatner. He’s not just another guy, he’s William Shatner’s Capt. Kirk,” Quentin shared during a podcast. “And Zachary Quinto is literally Leonard Nimoy’s — because they both have the same scene together — he’s his Spock. They f***ing nail it. They just nail it.”

Earlier this year, a fun Easter Egg was revealed in Quentin‘s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, where he showed off his love for Chris.

Chris Pine's Famous Grandmother Was Featured in 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood'

Chris Pine is opening up about how he found out that his maternal grandmother was featured in Quentin Tarantino‘s Oscar nominated movie, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

During the first ever episode of the Things Are Going Great For Me podcast with J. Claude Deering, the 40-year-old Wonder Woman 1984 actor says it was his mom that revealed the news to him.

“He knows everything about my grandmother,” Chris joked about Quentin‘s love for his grandmother, actress Anne Gwynne. “He knows film names, co-stars, directors, production designers, just unbelievable. So [he and my mother] ended up talking for about 40 minutes [at the Oscars] and I went off and got another martini.”

One of Anne‘s movies is featured in a very prominent scene in the film, and a group of characters are gathered around a television watching it on the set of Spahn Ranch.

Chris did admit that he missed the nod to his grandmother the first time around, before his mom told him.

“I call my folks and ask them if they’d seen it,” he shared. “They saw it, loved it, and my mom says, ‘You know, that scene at the ranch [with Bruce Dern] and there’s a TV on?’ I said, ‘Yeah, I vaguely kind of remember this.’ But she said, ‘On the television is one of my mother’s films.’”

“So, I have yet to get in touch with [Tarantino, about it]…obviously, it’s so sweet of him and I’m assuming that was done on purpose. My mother was ecstatic, just over the moon.”

Anne starred in a lot of movies including House of Frankenstein, South of Dixie and The Black Cat.

Just recently, Quentin opened up about possibly writing a novel based on Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Quentin Tarantino Almost Did a Luke Cage Movie with This Actor!

Quentin Tarantino was very, very close to doing a movie on one of his favorite comic book heroes!

In an interview on Amy Schumer‘s podcast (via The Guardian), the 57-year-old director/writer revealed that he had his heart set on making a Luke Cage starring Laurence Fishburne.

“There was a time before all this Marvel s–t was coming out It was after Reservoir Dogs, it was before Pulp Fiction, and I had thought about doing Luke Cage,” Quentin shared. “Growing up I was a big comic-book collector, and my two favorite [comic books] were Luke Cage: Hero for Hire, later Luke Cage: Power Man, and Shang-Chi: Master of Kung Fu.”

However, Quentin‘s friends talked him out of it because they thought Wesley Snipes would be better fit to play the titular role.

“What dissuaded me…was my comic-geek friends talked me out of it,” Quentin shared. “Because I had an idea that Larry Fishburne would’ve been the perfect guy to play Luke Cage. But all my friends were like, ‘It’s got to be Wesley Snipes.’ And I go, ‘Look, I like Wesley Snipes, but Larry Fishburne is practically Marlon Brando. I think Fish is the man.’ And they’re like, ‘Yeah, but he’d have to get in shape in a big way. Snipes is that way already!’ And I go, ‘F–k that! That’s not that important! F–k you, you ruined the whole damn thing!’”

Netflix released their series Luke Cage starring Mike Colter in 2016, which ran for two seasons.

Quentin Tarantino isn’t done with Once Upon a Time in Hollywood just yet.

During an appearance on the Pure Cinema podcast, the 57-year-old director was asked if he ever thought about writing book versions of his movies.

“I hadn’t thought about that until recently,” Quentin revealed. “But now I’m thinking a lot about it. I might be writing a novelization to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.”

Quentin released Once Upon a Time in Hollywood back in 2019, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, and Margot Robbie.

The film grossed $142 million at the domestic box office and $374 million globally, making it Quentin’s second most successful movie behind Django Unchained. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was nominated for 10 awards at the 2020 Academy Awards.

“You know, so it’s like uh, um, I go, ‘Okay, so I’m thinking maybe like, you know, okay, you unbutton, you unbutton the Hawaiian shirt, and peel that off’,” Quentin described filming the scene. “And then peel off the champion t-shirt.” And he’s like, ‘Really? Want me to through all that button bullshit? I just, I just take it off in one big go.’”
