SAG Awards Rescheduled to Avoid Conflict With Grammys 2021

The 2021 SAG Awards are moving again amid the pandemic.

The 27th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards has been rescheduled to April 4 following the announcement that the 2021 Grammy Awards moved to the previously scheduled date of March 14, Variety reported Wednesday (January 13).

The show, which honors outstanding film and TV performances, will be broadcast on TNT and TBS at 9 p.m. ET.

The SAG Awards issued a statement after the Grammys originally rescheduled to the same date in March.

“We are extremely disappointed to hear of the conflicting date, March 14th, announced today for this year’s Grammy Awards telecast. We announced the same date for the SAG Awards last July with the intent to give the greatest possible scheduling consideration for other awards shows. We expect the same consideration from sister organizations throughout the industry,” they said at the time.

“The SAG Awards recognizes outstanding acting performances over the past year. We will again put on a spectacular show that accomplishes that mission. Our two organizations, SAG-AFTRA and the Recording Academy, share members and work together effectively to advocate for artists in many areas. In an environment that is increasingly challenging for televised awards programs, we also have a mutual interest in successfully showcasing the artistry and talent of our respective memberships. We are in contact with the Recording Academy and will continue to work with our sister organizations to find ways to make this year’s awards season as successful as possible.”

The SAG Awards also extended this year’s eligibility period by two months, including works exhibited or broadcast between January 1, 2020 and Feb. 28, 2021. Nominations will be announced on February 4.

SAG Awards Will Not Eliminate Gender-Specific Categories in 2021, Asia Kate Dillon Turns Down Invitation to Join Nominating Committee

The SAG Awards will not eliminate gender-specific categories at the upcoming 2021 awards show and the SAG Awards Committee has responded to Billions star Asia Kate Dillon‘s open letter.

Dillon said that the categories at the awards show “erase non-binary identities by limiting performers to identifying as male or female / man or womxn,” and “serve as an endorsement of the gender binary at large.”

The SAG Awards Committee has invited Dillon to join a larger discussion on the issue in the future, but they said it’s not possible to make changes for the upcoming ceremony. They said that one, non gender-specific category “raises significant concerns in terms of gender parity as well as racial and ethnic diversity.”

In a response to the committee’s letter, published by Variety, Dillon challenged this assertion and said that the SAG Awards have not been historically diverse.

The committee also offered Dillon a space on the award show’s nominating committee, but the invitation was turned down.

There’s an awards show that Asia Kate is very supportive of after they made a big change.

SAG Awards Will Now Consider Movies That Were Not Released in Theaters

The 2021 Screen Actors Guild Awards is making a change from previous awards shows.

Following in the footsteps of the 2021 Oscars, the SAG organization informed studios that they will now be considering movies with a planned theatrical release to be eligible if streamed or released on VOD first.

“We are still revising our film release criteria but will be following the Academy’s rule change to allow titles with a planned theatrical release to be eligible if streamed or released on VOD first,” SAG wrote in an email via Variety. “Full language will be announced in June along with the rest of our rules.”

The official film rules for the 2021 SAG Awards won’t be fully released until next month and the organization did admit they are changing their rules and guidelines because of the ongoing pandemic.

The 2021 SAG Awards do not have a scheduled air date yet.
