Sandra Oh Gets Candid About Her Relationship With Her Parents Growing Up: 'I Put Them Through So Much S--t'

Sandra Oh is on the cover of Porter‘s latest issue, out now.

Here’s what the Killing Eve star had to say…

On the bond that Asian-American performers have with each other and building a creative community: “There is just this bond [between us]; we’re the first generation. I look up to the African-American creative community because of the way they have created a sense of individual and [collective] identity. It’s almost too early for us in the Asian community. It just speaks to where I feel we need to go.”

On her relationship with her parents at high school: “I put [my parents] through so much s–t. I did a lot of improv in high school, and in my last year we had a big competition. I was applying to theater school at the time…and I did an entire skit with two people playing my parents about how I wanted to go to the National Theatre School. And my parents were in the audience. Awful! What kind of daughter does that?”

On taking her mother and father to see the billboards for Killing Eve in 2018: “This is what I really love about my parents. Not only is it, this is my daughter on this billboard, it’s absolutely an Asian face too, and that has a profound meaning for them, which we don’t need to talk about, but I know they carry it. And I know they carry it for everyone in their generation.”

Killing Eve's Jodie Comer Talks Sandra Oh, Emmys 2019, Season 3, & More!

Jodie Comer shines alongside her Emmy award on the cover of the latest issue of Variety!

Here’s what the 26-year-old Killing Eve actress had to share with the mag:

On meeting fans who expect her to be like her Killing Eve character: “They’re surprised that I’m nice [and when fans admit they like her character] I’m like, ‘Good. I like that conflict that you’re experiencing when you’re watching television.’ It’s good to make people feel something, and she definitely seems to do that.”

On if competing with co-star Sandra Oh for awards is uncomfortable: “I think people think it’s more awkward than it is. I’ve always said: I feel incredibly fortunate to be part of a show that has two female leads that are complex and in the same category. It’s pretty special that we’re both in there together. We’re so celebratory of each other, as is the whole crew. There’s no hard feelings.”

On the blur that was accepting her award on stage: “I actually don’t know what I was thinking. I was in a complete state of shock. During the day I was strangely calm because I didn’t think it would be me. But it also happened so fast. You’re standing in front of all of these people, and you want to say the right thing and don’t want to miss anybody. You want to soak it up, not rush it, and take it all in. I feel like I blabbered on a lot!”

On season 3 of Killing Eve: “I can’t tell you anything — I was sworn to secrecy for Season 3. But what I’m really excited about is the emotions that Eve has stirred up within Villanelle. I think it triggers a lot. There’s still a lot of craziness going on, and Villanelle is up to her old tricks. But I think we’ll definitely see Villanelle in a much deeper sense.”
