'Dune' Could Still End Up in Theaters & Not Stream on HBO Max - Here's How

Dune producers and director Denis Villeneuve are not happy with Warner Bros’ decision to move the movie to HBO Max for streaming in October 2021, foregoing a major wide release.

If you missed it, HBO Max and Warner Bros. struck a deal to have every one of their movies stream on the platform, in addition to being released in theaters simultaneously.

Now, a source is speaking out about what might happen with Dune and Godzilla Vs Kong specifically.

According to Deadline, “Legendary is in a big fight that might result in lawsuits after it financed 75% of tentpoles ‘Dune’ and ‘Godzilla Vs. Kong’ and was completely blindsided. Rumors have the solution to that breach being to preserve ‘Dune’ as a traditional theatrical to preserve its franchise potential and since its October 1 release date falls well after the estimated late spring date when Covid vaccines should achieve herd immunity. ‘Godzilla Vs. Kong’ might stay an HBO Max hybrid in its May 21 slot, but only if Warner Bros. makes a deal with Legendary that uses as a base the $250 million value established when the film was shopped earlier to Netflix.”

The reason Dune producers are not happy with the streaming decision is reportedly because they believe it could hurt the ability to make the film into a franchise.

'Dune' Director Slams Warner Bros. for HBO Max Deal, Reveals How He Learned the News

Denis Villeneuve, the director of the upcoming Dune remake, is not happy that Warner Bros. plans on releasing his movie on HBO Max on the same day as the theatrical release.

The 53-year-old director, who is Oscar-nominated for his movie Arrival, wrote an op-ed piece for Variety in which he slammed the studio for the move.

Denis also said he learned about the studio’s decision by reading it in the news along with the rest of the world.

“I learned in the news that Warner Bros. has decided to release Dune on HBO Max at the same time as our theatrical release, using prominent images from our movie to promote their streaming service. With this decision AT&T has hijacked one of the most respectable and important studios in film history. There is absolutely no love for cinema, nor for the audience here,” Denis said in his statement.

He added, “Warner Bros.’ sudden reversal from being a legacy home for filmmakers to the new era of complete disregard draws a clear line for me. Filmmaking is a collaboration, reliant on the mutual trust of team work and Warner Bros. has declared they are no longer on the same team.”

Denis called Dune “by far the best movie” he’s ever made and he believes that Warner Bros. “might just have killed the Dune franchise” with this decision.

'Dune' Is Heading to Europe for Additional Shooting in August

Dune is getting more material.

The highly anticipated Denis Villeneuve project, which co-stars Timothee Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Zendaya and Oscar Isaac, is heading to Hungary to film additional content this summer, Deadline reported on Thursday (June 18).

The film, which is slated to be released on December 18, is not planning for a delay in release schedule.

“I understand that the extra shooting will not cause a delay and it will still release on that date. On a pic of this scale and ambition, shooting additional footage is pretty much par for the course and isn’t an indication of anything problematic with the existing material, which we hear is sizing up to be epic,” the report reads.

“The team are planning to head back to Budapest, Hungary, where the movie shot in 2019 at Origo Film Studios. Filming has also taken part in Jordan and Norway, and initially wrapped back in July last year.”

Oscar Isaac confirmed the news in an interview on the same day.

“We’re going to do some additional shooting in mid August…they’re saying in Budapest in Hungary. I saw some things cut together and it just looks amazing. Denis [Villeneuve] is a real artist and it will be exciting to see it come together. It’s kind of wild that we’re doing some additional shooting a few months before it’s supposed to come out, but that happened with Star Wars as well,” he said.

Get Your First Look at Timothee Chalamet in the 'Dune' Movie!

Timothee Chalamet is starring in the upcoming film adaptation of the sci-fi novel Dune and here is your first look at the movie!

The film is being directed by Denis Villeneuve, who is best known for his movies Blade Runner 2049, Arrival, and Sicario.

Dune is a 1965 novel by Frank Herbert and the book was turned into a 1984 movie starring Kyle MacLachlan.

Now, Timothee is taking on the lead role of Paul Atreides.

“The immediately appealing thing about Paul was the fact that in a story of such detail and scale and world-building, the protagonist is on an anti-hero’s-journey of sorts,” Timothee told Vanity Fair. “He thinks he’s going to be sort of a young general studying his father and his leadership of a fighting force before he comes of age, hopefully a decade later, or something like that.”

Female Focused 'Dune' Series Ordered, Denis Villeneuve to Direct Pilot

Dune: The Sisterhood, a female-focused take on the Frank Herbert novel “Dune” has been ordered by the upcoming WarnerMedia streaming service!

Denis Villeneuve, who directed the upcoming film version of Dune, is directing the pilot episode, which will be written by Jon Spaihts. Production on the movie began in March with Timothee Chalamet in the lead role. It hits theaters on November 20, 2020.

Dune: The Sisterhood takes place in the same universe as the novel “Dune” and “explores the future through the eyes of a mysterious order of women: the Bene Gesserit. Given abilities by their mastery of the body and the mind, the Bene Gesserit expertly weave through the feudal politics and intrigue of The Imperium, pursuing plans of their own that will ultimately lead them to the enigmatic planet Arrakis — known to its inhabitants as Dune,” according to THR.

“The Bene Gesserit have always been fascinating to me. Focusing a series around that powerful order of women seemed not only relevant and inspiring but a dynamic setting for the television series,” Villeneuve said in a statement.
