The Tony Awards Will Be Replaced By a 'Grease' Sing-a-long & People Are Not Happy
The 2020 Tony Awards was scheduled to take place on June 7, but the show has been indefinitely postponed due to the pandemic, so CBS has decided to fill that slot with a Grease singalong special.
The network has announced that the broadcast television premiere of Grease Sing-A-Long will air as part of the Sunday Night Movies lineup on June 7.
Fans are not happy that Broadway will not be given a national spotlight during that time slot, especially since the community is hurting so hard right now. It was just announced that Frozen, which has been a hit show on Broadway for two years, has officially closed and will not return when theaters are allowed to reopen. Many more shows are expected to follow.
Many fans have suggested that a virtual live stream event should be broadcast in the Tony Awards’ time slot. Another idea being thrown around is a special that shows highlights of past Tony Awards.
Not like, a retrospective of past great Tony performances and speeches and moments? Or something highlighting the amazing work that people in theatre do for their community? Or literally anything other than this? https://t.co/Crd6xdLr8A

I mean I love a #grease singalong but couldn’t that air literally any other night and then #Tonys night could be one of these options? https://t.co/vRC8egFddP

Grease singalong instead of the Tonys, a literal distillation of the idea that stars don't matter because we are all the talent now https://t.co/ECHd1aLMvE

I love Grease don’t get me wrong but using the Tonys time slot for a movie musical instead of theater is a bad look. https://t.co/CMg8nPb70I

Replacing the Tonys with a sing-a-long of GREASE? The darkest news I’ve received these past two months.

They could’ve replaced the Tonys with like….. a compilation of past performances but no, we are getting grease instead
