An update on the Tony Awards has finally been given, three months after nominations were announced for the 2020 ceremony.

The Tony Awards are usually held in June every year, but they were delayed in 2020 because of the pandemic. Many productions never had the chance to open on Broadway and only 18 productions met the eligibility for the awards.

Tony organizers have told Deadline that the 74th Annual Tony Awards ceremony will “be held on an as-yet-undetermined date in coordination with Broadway’s eventual reopening.”

Broadway’s re-opening date is still unknown, but insiders believe that shows will likely resume performances in Fall 2021.

Voting for the Tony Awards will begin on March 1 and will last for two weeks.

Actor Aaron Tveit was starring in Moulin Rouge! on Broadway before the pandemic shut everything down on March 12, 2020.

Because Broadway has been dark for months now, the Tony Awards were unable to go on as planned. Today, the nominees for the awards were finally announced and because of the truncated Broadway season, there are fewer nominees in some categories.

In a very unusual occurrence, Aaron is actually the only actor nominated in the category of Best Actor in a Musical!

So, will Aaron automatically win the prize? Not necessarily, and there’s a rule for this circumstance.

The Tony’s state: “If the Tony Awards Nominating Committee has determined that if there is only one nominee in a category listed, such category shall be submitted to the Tony Voters which may, by the affirmative vote of sixty (60%) percent of the total ballots cast, grant an Award in that category.”

Back in March, Aaron did contract the Coronavirus and explained his biggest symptom.

The 2020 Tony Awards nominations are finally here after a tumultuous year for Broadway.

If you don’t know, Broadway officially shut down on March 12, 2020 due to the Coronavirus pandemic. In a huge blow to live theater, it was recently announced that Broadway would not be re-opening until at least June 1, 2021.

So many shows were in previews or had not yet opened up Broadway that should have been eligible this year, but were not due to the closure of the industry. As a result, the 2019/2020 eligibility season began April 26, 2019 and ended prematurely on February 19, 2020.

Jagged Little Pill and Moulin Rouge! The Musical received the most recognition this year, with 15 and 14 nominations, respectively.

The 2020 Tony Awards are making a big change.

The annual theater awards ceremony announced on Friday (August 21) that this year’s ceremony will be presented digitally this fall amid the ongoing global health crisis.

“Final eligibility determinations will be made by the Tony Awards Administration Committee in the coming days. Additional information, including a date and platform for the awards ceremony, will be announced soon,” organizers said in a statement.

“Though unprecedented events cut the Broadway season short, it was a year full of extraordinary work that deserves to be recognized. We are thrilled not only to have found a way to properly celebrate our artists’ incredible achievements this season, but also to be able to uplift the entire theatre community and show the world what makes our Broadway family so special at this difficult time. The show must go on, no matter what – and it will,” said Charlotte St. Martin, President of the Broadway League, and Heather Hitchens, President & CEO of the American Theatre Wing.

A Tony Awards celebration was also recently canceled for another reason.

A 2020 Tony Awards celebration was set to take place this Sunday (June 7) after the actual Tony Awards had to be cancelled due to the Coronavirus.

Now, the celebration has been postponed due to the injustices in the world that have been thrust into the spotlight after the senseless death of George Floyd at the hands of a white police officer.

“We are collectively saddened and angered by the senseless murders of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Tony McDade, Breonna Taylor and disheartened by the ongoing racism and injustices that continue to permeate our society. We at Broadway On Demand do not tolerate hate, racism, injustice or bigotry of any kind. The continued violence against Black Americans is inexcusable. We stand in solidarity with Black Lives Matter,” Broadway on Demand said in a statement to Just Jared. “This is a pivotal moment in our nation’s history and our priorities at this time are to listen, to engage in meaningful dialogue and to do our best to enact real change in our industry and in our nation. We truly believe theater has the power to educate, inspire, develop empathy, bridge cultural divides and ultimately unite under the banner of humanity. Broadway On Demand recognizes that we have the power to influence and change the world through art. Our goal as an organization is to create a platform where underrepresented voices can be amplified and uplifted. That is why it is of the utmost importance that the programs we deliver adhere to these beliefs and reflect the world in which we live.”

There is still a second celebration scheduled for June 7.

The 2020 Tony Awards will not be held on the originally scheduled date this year, but two celebrations will be live streamed to toast Broadway’s biggest night!

On Sunday, June 7, the newly launched streaming platform Broadway on Demand will air a one-hour Tony Awards Celebration at 6pm ET. The show will be a “specially created, never-before-seen event in celebration of the Broadway community, the Tony Awards, and the global impact that Broadway has as a cultural touchstone around the world.” You can watch it on TonyAwards.com or BroadwayOnDemand.com.

Then at 7pm ET, make sure to switch over to Broadway.com and YouTube to check out Show of Shows: Broadway.com Salutes The Tonys.

Both of the specials will benefit The American Theatre Wing and the Broadway League Foundation.

CBS was supposed to air the Tony Awards on June 7 and the network faced a lot of backlash when it was announced that a Grease Sing-a-long special would air in that time slot.

The 2020 Tony Awards was scheduled to take place on June 7, but the show has been indefinitely postponed due to the pandemic, so CBS has decided to fill that slot with a Grease singalong special.

The network has announced that the broadcast television premiere of Grease Sing-A-Long will air as part of the Sunday Night Movies lineup on June 7.

Fans are not happy that Broadway will not be given a national spotlight during that time slot, especially since the community is hurting so hard right now. It was just announced that Frozen, which has been a hit show on Broadway for two years, has officially closed and will not return when theaters are allowed to reopen. Many more shows are expected to follow.

Many fans have suggested that a virtual live stream event should be broadcast in the Tony Awards’ time slot. Another idea being thrown around is a special that shows highlights of past Tony Awards.
