'Avatar' Beats 'Avengers Endgame' to Become Top-Grossing Film at Global Box Office

James Cameron‘s 2009 film Avatar has become the highest-grossing film of all-time at the global box office – again!

It was reported on Friday (March 12) that Avatar was expected to overtake 2019′s Avengers: Endgame due to the movie being rereleased in China.

The Oscar-winning movie became the highest-grossing of all time during its initial theatrical run, but was overtaken by the Avengers film in 2019.

According to THR, the film earned over $8 million through Saturday afternoon alone. That takes Avatar‘s total box office to a total of $2.8 billion, versus the $2.797 billion Endgame made.

Avatar‘s producer Jon Landau said of the news, “We are proud to reach this great milestone, but Jim and I are most thrilled that the film is back in theaters during these unprecedented times, and we want to thank our Chinese fans for their support. We are hard at work on the next Avatar films and look forward to sharing the continuation of this epic story for years to come.”

James Cameron recently shared a huge update about the sequel to Avatar.

'Avatar' Is Set To Become The Highest-Grossing Movie of All Time

Avengers: Endgame is about to be dethroned as the highest-grossing film of all time by Avatar!

Variety is reporting that the 2009 movie is on the way to reclaim the title after Avengers: Endgame took it in 2019.

Prior the release of the Marvel movie, Avatar had been the highest-grossing movie in history by earning $2.7897 billion worldwide.

Avengers: Endgame took over the slot when it banked $2.7902 billion in global ticket sales.

However, with the re-release of the movie in Chinese theaters, Avatar is set to reclaim the title after grossing $3.5 million.

After this weekend, Avatar is expected to take back the top box office prize.

Avatar, which starred Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver and Zoe Saldana, was directed by James Cameron.

The movie centered on a paraplegic Marine dispatched to the moon Pandora on a unique mission, who then becomes torn between following his orders and protecting the world he feels is his home.

A sequel to the movie is on the way!

James Cameron Shares A Big Update About 'Avatar 2'

James Cameron shared a brand new update about the status of the upcoming Avatar sequel.

The 66-year-old director spoke with Arnold Schwarzenegger in a video call ahead of the 2020 Austrian World Summit environmental conference and revealed that the sequel is complete.

James also opened up about how the pandemic affected filming on the movie.

“COVID hit us like it hit everybody. It hit us hard. We lost about four-and-a-half months of production,” he said. “As a result of that, we’ve rolled around one more full year for a release in December of 2022. That’s been announced already.”

James continued, “Now that doesn’t mean I have an extra year to finish the film, because the day we deliver Avatar 2 we’ll just start working on finishing Avatar 3.”

“So where we are right now, I’m down in New Zealand shooting — we’re shooting the remainder of the live action, we’ve got about 10 per cent left to go. We’re 100 per cent complete on Avatar 2, and we’re sort of 95 per cent complete on Avatar 3.”

Avatar 2: The Way of Water is expected to hit theaters in December 2022.

Earlier in the summer, James shared a pic of the set from New Zealand. You can see it here…

James Cameron is back in New Zealand, but he won’t be back on set of the Avatar sequel just yet.
