Rent Live's Brennin Hunt Reveals How He Broke His Foot

Brennin Hunt, the star of Rent Live, is opening up about how he broke his foot during the dress rehearsal over the weekend.

The actor, who played Roger Davis in the musical, was injured the night before the big show and was unable to perform during the previously planned live telecast. Fox decided to air the dress rehearsal performance and then go live for the finale, during which Brennin sat on a table with his leg propped up on a chair.

“When we finished ‘What You Own,’ when we climbed the ladders, Jordan [Fisher, who played Mark] and I had to run, all the way through that commercial break, downstage, across the scaffolding and down two flights of stairs to do our quick change for the finale,” Brennin said in an interview with Variety. “And we made it down one flight and we came around the next flight, and I was jumping off that last step to make a left, and my right foot just rolled over, and I snapped a bone in the arch of my foot.”

“And I immediately dropped and was in a lot of pain, and I knew it wasn’t good because even with my in-ear monitors I could hear it snap,” he added. “But I was just telling myself, ‘It’s not broken; it’s just a sprain; I’ll be back tomorrow! They can shoot me up with drugs or whatever, I’m doing it!’ Then I get to the ER and they do the CAT-Scan, and they said, ‘Well, it’s broken.’ That’s how it played out.”

Brennin said the doctors told him that if he tried to stand on his foot, he’d end up needing surgery, so his hope to continue with the show was shot down.

The cast of Rent Live actually DID do a live performance on Sunday night for the studio audience and some videos have been released from that show.

Rent Live's Brennin Hunt Breaks Silence on Broken Foot, Requiring Show to Be 'Previously Recorded'

Brennin Hunt broke his foot during the Rent Live dress rehearsal on Saturday (January 26) and Fox was forced to show previously recorded footage instead of having the show go live.

Brennin took to his Instagram Story before the show to briefly address the injury.

First, he showed the show’s costume designer sewing him into his pants over his leg cast.

In another clip, Brennin said, “Breaking my foot last night was not fun but it’s been great being back on set with everybody. I love these people so much. They have showered me with love and kindness, which is the essence of this musical. I am just truly honored and blessed to be a part of this family and I hope you enjoy tonight.”

At the end of the broadcast, the show will go live as the whole cast gets together.

'Rent Live' Cast Addresses Why Show Is 'Previously Recorded,' Will Go Live at End

If you were watching the beginning of Rent Live, you may have noticed the broadcast said “previously recorded” before the show kicked off.

Many fans were confused, but it looks like Brennin Hunt‘s sudden injury during the dress rehearsal on Saturday (January 26) caused a major change of plans.

Brennin, who plays Roger, broke his foot, and the cast addressed that the show would no longer be live after the prerecorded number “Light My Candle” between Brennin and Tinashe. Instead, they’ll be showing footage from Saturday’s dress rehearsal before Brennin‘s injury.

“Last night during our performance in front of a live audience, one of our cast members sustained an injury,” Vanessa Hudgens, who plays Maureen, said during the clip. “A visit to the hospital confirmed that Brennin Hunt, our Roger, broke his foot and will be unable to perform tonight.”

“But Rent has always been about community, resiliency and bouncing back, so the show much go on,” Valentina, who plays Angel, added.

Jordan Fisher, who plays Mark, added, “Most of what you’ll see tonight comes will from last night’s performance, but we have all rallied together to rework the final act so all of us can perform it for you live.”

The cast did add that they will come together at the end of the show for a live number and Brennin will be included, despite his injury.
