Tom Hanks and Bruce Springsteen are paying their respects to esteemed director Jonathan Demme, who lost his battle to cancer earlier this week.

The actor and the musician shared their thoughts during the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival on Friday (April 28) in New York City.

In Jonathan‘s 1993 film Philadelphia, Tom took home the best actor Academy Award, while Bruce took home an Oscar for the movie’s opening song, “Streets of Philadelphia.”

“I think the strongest union of our two names is probably Philadelphia,” Tom told the crowd. “God bless Jonathan Demme. We just lost him.”

“He was such an inspirational guy,” Bruce added. “No Jonathan Demme, no Philadelphia, no ‘Streets of Philadelphia.’ [Jonathan] wanted more of a rock song for the beginning, so I said I’d give it a shot. I tried for a day or so to come up with something, and I didn’t come up with anything. I had some lyrics. Eventually, I just came up with that tiny little beat and the track, and I figured it wasn’t what he wanted but I sent it to him anyway. He sent me that opening piece of film where the camera moves slowly through Philly, and I said, ‘What do you think?’ And he says, ‘Great.’ And that was it. It took about two days.”

“Well, I have to tell you,” Tom chimed in, “if you ever want to have a great moment in a motion picture, walk out a door and make sure they just put up a Bruce Springsteen song.”

Bruce Springsteen is opening up about getting into some trouble with the law for not paying his taxes.

The 67-year-old musician explained that back in the 1970s, he didn’t know anyone who was paying their taxes!

“First of all, I never met anyone in New Jersey who paid any taxes! We never paid any taxes,” Bruce said during a Tribeca Talk.

He added, “Then when we got with [manager] Mike Appel. He was handling all our business and his thing was, ‘We’re not paying any f**king taxes.’ So, years went by and…all of this time went by. Nobody’s paying taxes – me, the band, no one I know.”

Bruce explained that the IRS caught up to him when they noticed him on the cover of Time magazine in 1975.

“They came after us and I had to work for a couple years for somebody else every night. Then we had to pay lawyers. In 1980, I think I had about $20,000 to my name,” Bruce added.

Bruce Springsteen has released a new song in protest of President Donald Trump.

Titled “That’s What Makes Us Great,” the track was written by Bruce‘s longtime pal, musician Joe Grushecky.

“I sent it to him and he liked it,” Joe told Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “I said, ‘What do you think about singing on it?’ He gave it the Bruce treatment.”

Some of the lyrics include (via Pitchfork), “Don’t you brag to me/ That you never read a book/ I never put my faith/ In a con man and his crooks.”

Bruce Springsteen is joining forces with tons of others who have been speaking out about President Donald Trump‘s immigration ban.

The 67-year-old singer addressed the “Muslim ban” during a concert on Monday (January 30) in Adelaide, Australia.

“Tonight, we want to add our voices to the thousands of Americans who are protesting at airports around our country the Muslim ban and the detention of foreign nationals and refugees,” Bruce told the crowd. “America is a nation of immigrants and we find this anti-democratic and fundamentally un-American.”

“This is an immigrant’s song,” he added before performing “American Land,” a song he created using a poem by a 19th-century American steelworker along with music by protest singer Pete Seeger.

Bruce Springsteen took a moment to recognize the Women’s March during his latest concert.

The legendary singer, who often speaks out about politics and causes he supports, sent love during his show at Perth Arena on Sunday (January 22) in Perth, Australia.

“We’re a long way from home, and our hearts and spirits are with the hundreds of thousands of men and women that marched yesterday in every city in America – and in Melbourne!” Bruce told the crowd. “[They] rallied against hate and division and in support of tolerance, inclusion, reproductive rights, civil rights, racial justice, LGBTQ rights, the environment, wage equality, gender equality, healthcare, and immigrant rights. We stand with you. We are the new American resistance.”

After almost not being allowed inside the White House, Ellen DeGeneres had an emotional moment while being presented the Presidential Medal of Freedom!

The talk show host was one of 21 stars who received the medal from President Barack Obama at a ceremony in the East Room on Tuesday (November 22) in Washington, D.C.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the highest honor that a U.S. civilian can receive and Ellen teared up while being given her medal.

“In a career spanning three decades, Ellen DeGeneres has lifted our spirits and brought joy to our lives as a stand-up comic, actor, and television star. In every role, she reminds us to be kind to one another and to treat people as each of us wants to be treated. At pivotal moments, her courage and candor helped change the minds and hearts of millions of Americans, accelerating our nation’s constant drive toward equality and acceptance for all,” the announcer said while she stood on stage with Obama. “Again and again, Ellen DeGeneres has shown us that a single individual can make the world a more fun, more open, more loving place, so long as we ‘just keep swimming.’”

Other stars who received the medal included Tom Hanks, Diana Ross, Robert De Niro, Bruce Springsteen, Robert Redford, Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels, basketball players Michael Jordan and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Bill and Melinda Gates, and more.

Adam Driver happily flashes a smile alongside Staff Sergeant, US Army Michael Kacer, while attending the 2016 Stand Up For Heroes Gala Concert held at The Theater at Madison Square Garden on Monday (November 1) in New York City.

The 32-year-old actor was joined by Bridget Moynahan, and performers of the evening Bruce Springsteen, Jim Gaffigan, Jerry Seinfeld, Louis C.K., Jon Stewart and Phillip Phillips.

Jon hit the stage with a 15 minute set about the race for the presidency, roasting candidate Donald Trump in the process.

“To be here tonight with you guys, my heroes, on the eve of the last American election is so exciting,” Jon expressed (via CNN). “I’m not in the game anymore. I’m not as much of a political analyst… but if I could ask you a question that I’ve been saying to my television, it’s ‘What the [expletive deleted]? What the [expletive deleted] is going on? What is happening?!’ I thought when a guy got off a bus and says, ‘I’m going to grab her by the [expletive deleted],’ then okay, we’re done. The election is over. Usually that is a signifier that we don’t have to pay attention anymore.”
