Chloe Zhao made Oscar history over the weekend when she won the Best Director award, as well as Best Picture, at the 2021 Oscars.
However, it seems that China, where Chloe was born, has remained silent over her big wins.
According to The New York Times, the Chinese government actually blacked out and censored any social media posts or news articles in the country which recognized her wins.

One memorable moment that happened at the 2021 Oscars is when Best Actress winner Frances McDormand let out a big howl during the acceptance speech for the Nomadland‘s Best Picture win.
During her speech, Frances said, “Please watch our movie on the largest screen possible. And one day, very very soon, take everyone you know into a theater, shoulder to shoulder, in that dark space, and watch every film represented here tonight. We give this one to our wolf,” she said before unleashing a mighty howl to cheers.
Director Chloé Zhao, who also won the Best Director award for her work on the film, actually explained that the howl was done for a very specific reason.

Chloe Zhao is making Oscars history!
The 39-year-old filmmaker won the award for Best Director for Nomadland at the 2021 Academy Awards on Sunday (April 25).
“I have always found goodness in the people I met, everywhere I went in the world,” Chloe said in her acceptance speech. “This is for anyone who has the faith and the courage to hold on to the goodness in themselves and to hold on to the goodness in each other, no matter how difficult it is to do that.”
Chloe is the first woman of color to ever win the award, and the second woman in history to win Best Director. The first woman winner was Kathryn Bigelow for The Hurt Locker back in 2008.
Nomadland is also nominated tonight for Best Picture.
Chloe made a very rare public appearance with her longtime boyfriend while arriving at the awards show.

Chloe Zhao and boyfriend Joshua James Richards are making a rare red carpet appearance together!
The 39-year-old Nomadland director and her longtime partner walked the red carpet together at the 2021 Academy Awards on Sunday (April 25) at Union Station in Los Angeles.
For the big event, Chloe looked so cool in a long-sleeved, tan turtleneck dress paired with white sneakers while Joshua sported an all-black tux for the event.
Also joining the couple on the red carpet was Swankie, a real-life nomad turned actress, who appears in Nomadland.
Chloe is nominated tonight for Best Director for Nomadland, while Joshua is nominated for Best Cinematography for the film.
Nomadland is also nominated for Best Picture alongside The Father, Judas and the Black Messiah, Mank, Minari, Promising Young Woman, Sound of Metal, and The Trail of the Chicago 7.

Nomadland was a big winner at the 2021 Critics Choice Awards on Sunday (March 7).
Chloe Zhao picked up the award for Best Director on the film, and the flick also won Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Picture, and Best Cinematography.
During the acceptance speeches, Chloe and producer Mollye Asher dedicated the awards to Michael Wolf Snyder, who was a sound mixer on the movie.
Michael sadly died by suicide at the young age of 35 last week, according to a report from Deadline.
“Thank you Wolf. We honor you,” Chloe shared in her speech after recalling a few special moments on the set with him. “We’ll see you down the road my friend.”

A new Dracula movie is in the works!
Variety has announced that Nomadland director Chloe Zhao is set to direct an adaptation of Bram Stoker‘s classic horror novel.
While details of the movie have yet to be released, the project is said to be a re-interpretation of the book that incorporates science fiction and western elements.
Chloe said in a statement, ““I’ve always been fascinated by vampires and the concept of the Other they embody. I’m very excited to work with Donna [Langley], Peter [Cramer] and the team at Universal to reimagine such a beloved character.”
The novel has been adapted a few times, with Bela Lugosi taking on the iconic role in 1931, Gary Oldman starring in Francis Ford Coppola‘s adaptation in 1992 and most recently in the 2014 Luke Evans reboot Dracula Untold.

The 2021 Golden Globes are making long overdue history.
After being called out in years past for the lack of nominated women directors, the awards show recognized female filmmakers more than ever by nominating three women in the Best Director category: Chloe Zhao for Nomadland, Emerald Fennell for Promising Young Woman and Regina King for One Night in Miami.

The three directors will compete against David Fincher for Mank and Aaron Sorkin for The Trial of the Chicago 7.
It’s the first time that more than one woman has been recognized in the best director category at the Golden Globes. Previously, a woman had only been nominated seven times since the first ceremony was held in 1944.
“In Hollywood, female filmmakers are still vastly underrepresented. Women accounted for 16% of directors working on the 100 highest-grossing films in 2020, an improvement from the 12% in 2019 and the 4% in 2018. Yet it’s a sign that the entertainment industry falls far behind on gender parity,” Variety noted.
Chloe’s nomination also makes her the first woman of Asian descent to be nominated for best director, and Regina‘s nomination makes her the second Black woman to be nominated.
For now, Barbra Streisand is the only women to ever win the Golden Globe for best director.
