Chris Carmack Was 'Drenched in Tears' Watching Justin Chambers's Exit From 'Grey's Anatomy'

Chris Carmack is opening up about watching Justin Chambers leave Grey’s Anatomy after 15 seasons on the show.

The actor, who plays Dr. Atticus Lincoln on the drama, spoke to People about watching Justin say goodbye.

“[Chambers’] contributions to the story over the years was one that was difficult to say goodbye to,” Chris shared. “The Grey’s community is definitely a family and supportive of one another. There was an emotional fallout amongst cast and crew when we found out.”

He added that like many, he was also in tears.

“It was really kind of beautiful to look back on Alex Karev and his 16 years of life on the show,” he continued. “Watching him and Meredith and their first go around, and him and Izzie. How incredible to see a flashback of 16 years ago that was actually shot as part of the television show. It was very tangible and emotional.”

Chris added, “It wasn’t just a flashback from that episode. Those were scenes that fans had invested in so long ago. To see them all back to back was very powerful.”

'Grey's Anatomy' Writers Have Discussed This Topic the Most in Season 16

There’s one topic that the writers of Grey’s Anatomy have talked about more than any others this season.

Season 16 of the hit medical drama returns TOMORROW (January 23), and Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19 showrunner Krista Vernoff is teasing fans about what they can expect. Here’s what she had to share with TV Guide:

[SPOILER ALERT: Do not continue reading if you don't want to know what's happened in Grey's Anatomy up until now!]

On the “package” from Cristina and how that is going to complicate things: “It’s a complicated gift. He’s a complicated gift. He’s a sexy Irishman, who is a widower and a father of two. It feels like the perfect character for Meredith to ask herself the questions that many of us and many fans have been asking since ‘MerLuca’ became a thing. Could this man ultimately be enough for Meredith? Is he enough of a grown-up, is he enough of an equal? You need someone to come in and play the role of ‘grown-up equal’ to ask that and answer that question, and that’s all I can tell you.”

On the twist about the paternity of Amelia’s baby and making the situation even more complicated than it already is: “Was it complicated? Because [Link and Amelia] seemed like a really sweet lovely, couple. I think it’s complicated now, and I think it’s complicated in a way that will force Amelia and Link into difficult, really difficult, conversations and complications. I’m curious to see where they’re going to land.”

On if this will resurrect an Amelia/Owen-centered love triangle, or if she romantically over him at this point: “I would say sort of somewhere in the middle. I don’t know that we’re resurrecting a love triangle. I also don’t know that I would say that she’s 100% over Owen. I don’t know that those two ever, get 100% over each other. This is a little bit of a mess, and we’ve probably had more conversations in the writers’ room this season about whose baby that is going to end up being than anything else.”

On what she’s most excited for fans to see in the back half of the season: “I’m excited for fans to see Richard’s story. Richard has a really dramatic storyline coming, and he’s incredible. Jim Pickens is incredible, and, oh man, I watched a cut last night that was just — I mean, like my heart ached. He’s amazing, and I’m excited for fans to see it.”

The Grey’s Anatomy two-hour crossover event with Station 19 premieres tomorrow at 9/8c on ABC!
