David Oyelowo Turns Down A Lot of Acting Roles Because of This

David Oyelowo has been turning away certain acting roles he’s been offered.

Speaking to Access, the 44-year-old Don’t Let Go actor opened up about how he’s turned down about 80% of the parts he’s been offered.

“I live my life from the perspective of ‘I must be part of the solution and not the problem,’” David shared. “I think one of the privileges I don’t have is to just do any role I want, because I know that certain roles perpetuate stereotypes and perpetuate mindsets people have about Black people that is not helpful to all of what we’re talking about…”

He adds that he turns down “about 80 percent of what comes my way for that reason, because I understand the power storytelling and images has on culture.”

David also spoke about one of his more recognizable roles as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in Selma.

“I felt called [by] God to do it,” he says. “I was rejected by the original director, and there were another four directors before Lee Daniels came along and cast me. And we still couldn’t get the film made.”

He added, “That was a seven-year journey and so I just had the moment of, ‘OK, Lord, if you told me to do this, you’re just gonna have to equip me. I’m gonna do the work.’”

Speaking of Selma, did you know that you can stream the movie for free right now?

Oscar-Nominated Movie 'Selma' Is Now Streaming for Free in June

Selma, Ava DuVernay‘s directorial debut, is available to stream for free for the entire month of June on multiple platforms.

The film centers on the historic civil rights marches led by Martin Luther King, Jr. (played by David Oyelowo) that culminated in the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which prohibits racial discrimination in voting and ensures Black Americans, and other racial minorities, the right to vote.

The film, which also stars Oprah Winfrey, Common, Carmen Ejogo, Cuba Gooding, Jr. and many others, will be on Amazon Prime and YouTube for free for the entire month.

The move follows Warner Bros. making their recent movie, Just Mercy that starred Jamie Foxx and Michael B. Jordan, for free as well.

David recently opened up about the film in an interview with ScreenDaily, where he admits the film was punished by the Academy because of the cast speaking out about the murder of Eric Garner, who also said “I Can’t Breathe” just moments before his death.

“I remember at the premiere of Selma us wearing ‘I Can’t Breathe’ t-shirts in protest. Members of the Academy called into the studio and our producers saying, ‘How dare they do that? Why are they stirring [sh--]?’ and ‘We are not going to vote for that film because we do not think it is their place to be doing that.’”

He adds, “It’s part of why that film didn’t get everything that people think it should’ve got and it birthed #OscarsSoWhite. They used their privilege to deny a film on the basis of what they valued in the world.”
