Taron Egerton is speaking out after it was claimed that his upcoming Elton John biopic, Rocketman, would straight-wash his life.

The musical fantasy movie depicts Elton‘s relationship with his former manager John Reid (Richard Madden), and includes intimate scenes between the two.

“He’s a gay icon,” Taron told Empire. “And who are we, as frankly heterosexual filmmakers, to not put that element of his story? How dare we. And that’s not what we did.”

Taron also became the subject of criticism for being a straight actor playing a gay man, and Elton came to his defense in a statement.

The 29-year-old actor was joined at the event by his co-stars Bryce Dallas Howard, Richard Madden and Kit Connor, as well as Elton John and his husband David Furnish, and director Dexter Fletcher.

Also in attendance to show their support for the film were Claudia Schiffer, Kelly Osbourne and her beau Jimmy Q, Boy George, Terri Seymour, James Blunt and wife Sofia Wellesley, Elizabeth Hurley, Andy Serkis and his wife Lorraine Ashbourne.

That same day, Taron was spotted making his way out of the BBC Radio 1 studios after promoting Rocketman first thing in the morning.

A video of Taron spotted in the audience crying as screeners rose from their chairs to give him a standing ovation has gone viral, and he made sure to address it during the press conference: “Alright, alright. Let’s stop talking about it,” Taron said about his tearful reaction. “I got a bit emotional. It was one of the best days of my life.”

“We have worked really hard to try and make something that we are all really proud of,” Taron continued. “It’s not your typical biopic. We don’t deal with the songs in a chronological order. There are elements of fantasy. We take some license with the truth, people did not float off the ground at The Troubadour. The response has been so wonderful. For me, personally, thank you so much to everyone that said nice things. You’ve made a young man from Aberystwyth incredibly happy. You’ve made a 72-year-old rock star even more happy. So thank you very much.”
