Normani Gets Candid About Feeling Overlooked in Fifth Harmony

Normani is opening up about her career.

The 24-year-old Fifth Harmony member turned solo superstar spoke out in an interview with Women’s Health, out now.

Here’s what she had to say…

On establishing a more fulfilling career: “For a long time, I was stressed out about checking boxes like, ‘Is this Black enough? Is this pop enough?’ But music started feeling way better when I just went into the studio with the mentality of being Normani. People will always remember how you made them feel and what a record did for them. My lyrics have more depth, and they’re more intentional and come from a more authentic place, because I now feel more connected to myself than before.”

On how lockdown has strengthened her relationship with her mind and body: “I’ve been able to meditate more and take a time-out before allowing anybody else to affect my energy. Before I talk to anybody, before I look at a text, before I go on Instagram, I center myself in my room and pray and do breathing exercises and create my own space so that I have a foundation to walk on throughout the rest of the day.”

On being overlooked for opportunities as part of girl group Fifth Harmony, where she was the only Black member: “That alters the perception you have of yourself. Having certain things happen so blatantly while also feeling like the ‘other’ and being so young and hearing the public compare [us] took a toll on my confidence. For a long time, I didn’t believe in myself because I didn’t feel like I was given the opportunity to.”

On her future: “Hopefully, in the next few years I’ll have life a little bit more figured out. But if I don’t, I’m okay. I don’t think we ever have it all figured out. But anything that God has placed on my heart, I want to be fearless in.”

Earlier in the year, Normani opened up about a group member’s past remarks.

Lauren Jauregui Reveals How She Felt About Those Rumors About Her & Camila Cabello

During Camila Cabello‘s time in Fifth Harmony, there were continued rumors about her and Lauren Jauregui being into each other.

Lauren went on Becky G‘s En La Sala podcast on Amazon Music and was asked how she felt about those rumors that the pair secretly had something going on behind the scenes.

“People thought Camila and I were into each other, and that made me so uncomfortable. Like disgustingly so uncomfortable, because I was queer, but she was not. It made me feel like a predator, essentially,” Lauren said. “It made me feel like a predator because of the type of clips people would put together, the type of stories people would write, and the type of stuff, I was always the aggressor, and I was always the one turning her. I was always the one who was like the ‘masculine’ energy in the scenario, and it made me very uncomfortable because that’s not how I identify. That’s not to say that that’s wrong to identify with that.”

“I also did not have that connection with her. Camila and I were just very good friends, at that time,” she added. “We respected each other. When each other would talk, we would look at each other. We had love for each other, like genuine friendship.”

“In the Latinx culture, growing up, I was very affectionate with all of my friends,” Lauren continued. “…that actually made me so uncomfortable to the point where, I, to this day, hyper-analyze every connection that I have with a girl because I don’t want them to feel like I’m looking at them that way.”

Recently, another member of Fifth Harmony addressed another big behind-the-scenes story line.

Ally Brooke, who is waiting for marriage, explained that it’s tough being a virgin – especially when you think you’re the only one, which she feels is a misconception.

“You just gotta stay strong and remember why I did it, and the end goal. It’s a marathon, right?” she said.

“If you guys are trying to honor that choice, stick to it, remember why you did it. Know that you’re not alone. ‘Cause there are some people may be feel like, gosh, I’m the only one in this boat…but you have a lot of people who are with you, and have the same struggles and challenges as you. I’m here to root you on, say hey, stay strong. I know it’s though, but you really can do it.”

She also said she drew inspiration from fellow stars.

Jordin [Sparks], also like Jessica Simpson, even I think it was Adriana Lima or Alessandra Ambrosio who also said the same thing. That was awesome to know I’m not alone in this choice, and I’m being empowered by other women. I’m very proud of that personal decision. And I’m happy I could share it with my fans and be honest,” she continued.

“It’s also awesome. I can still be flirtatious, and be sexy and fun in my music videos and in my songs. There’s just a certain line that I’m comfortable with – certain songs that I will song, certain lyrics I gotta change, but it’s awesome just being empowered to be who I wanna be.”

She also revealed Camila Cabello was almost replaced with a famous singer.

Ally Brooke Reveals Fifth Harmony Had Option to Replace Camila Cabello with Popular Singer

Ally Brooke‘s new book “Finding Your Harmony: Dream Big, Have Faith, and Achieve More Than You Can Imagine” was released this week, and in it, she revealed that Fifth Harmony had the option of replacing Camila Cabello when she decided to exit the group back in 2016.

Ally explained in the text that the options were finding a fifth singer through a reality show search, or, replacing Camila with an already popular, well known artist.

“There were several different options and routes we could’ve taken. There were a lot of different ideas floating around,” Ally told StyleCaster. “But the four of us decided, ‘Hey. We think it would be odd to all of a sudden bring someone.’ The four of us have a history, and we know what we went through together. We know our journey. We know each other. We felt like there was no question that we should continue on as we were.”

Ally then said that one singer who was offered as an option did pique her interest!

“I don’t know if I can share, but one would’ve been really cool,” Ally added. “She’s at the top now, and everybody loves her. I love her. That wasn’t what we felt like would be right for our group, even though we love this other singer, and she’s awesome. She probably wouldn’t have accepted anyways because she probably would’ve said the same thing, like, ‘I don’t know if I should step in here.’ And her career is already blowing up.”

If you missed it, Ally recently revealed some extremely personal news about her sex life.

Well, Lauren got a ton of backlash from many, criticizing anti-vax theories.

Normani Breaks Silence About Camila Cabello's Past Racist Remarks

Normani is speaking out about fellow Fifth Harmony member Camila Cabello‘s past racist remarks in old Tumblr posts and tweets, which she apologized for at the end of 2019.

“I want to be very clear about what I’m going to say on this uncomfortable subject and figured it would be best to write out my thoughts to avoid being misconstrued, as I have been in the past. I struggled with talking about this because I didn’t want it to be a part of my narrative, but I am a black woman, who is a part of an entire generation that has a similar story,” she said in an e-mail statement to the magazine.

“I face senseless attacks daily, as does the rest of my community. This represents a day in the life for us. I have been tolerating discrimination far before I could even comprehend what exactly was happening. Direct and subliminal hatred has been geared towards me for many years solely because of the color of my skin. It would be dishonest if I said that this particular scenario didn’t hurt me. It was devastating that this came from a place that was supposed to be a safe haven and a sisterhood, because I knew that if the tables were turned I would defend each of them in a single heartbeat. It took days for her to acknowledge what I was dealing with online and then years for her to take responsibility for the offensive tweets that recently resurfaced. Whether or not it was her intention, this made me feel like I was second to the relationship that she had with her fans.”

“I don’t want to say that this situation leaves me hopeless because I believe that everyone deserves the opportunity for personal growth. I really hope that an important lesson was learned in this. I hope there is genuine understanding about why this was absolutely unacceptable. I have spoken what is in my heart and pray this is transparent enough that I never have to speak on it again. To my brown men and women, we are like no other. Our power lies within our culture. We are descendants of an endless line of strong and resilient kings and queens. We have been and will continue to win in all that we do simply because of who we are. We deserve to be celebrated, I deserve to be celebrated and I’m just getting started,” she went on to say.
