Sebastian Stan Reacts to Francis Ford Coppola Saying Marvel Movies Are 'Despicable'

Sebastian Stan is defending Marvel.

During a panel at the 2019 Fandemic Tour on Sunday afternoon (October 20) in Houston, Texas, the 37-year-old actor defended the superhero movies after director Francis Ford Coppola said Marvel movies were “despicable.”

“He’s one of my heroes and I was listening to him and meanwhile, I just spent the day with all of you,” Sebastian shared (via Comic Book). “People have been going up to me like ‘Thank you so much for this character,’ ‘This movie helped me out so much,’ ‘This movie inspired me. Now I feel better. Now I feel less alone,’ so how can you say these movies are not helping people?”

Martin Scorsese recently criticized Marvel movies saying they were “not cinema” and Francis defended his friend saying, “he’s right because we expect to learn something from cinema, we expect to gain something, some enlightenment, some knowledge, some inspiration.” There are numerous other stars who have also slammed Marvel.

Francis Ford Coppola Thinks Marvel Movies Are 'Despicable'

Martin Scorsese previously made headlines for his thoughts on Marvel movies and now his friend Francis Ford Coppola is defending him.

Scorsese previously said that the Marvel movies are “not cinema.” Coppola went even further with his comments and said that movies in the MCU are “despicable.”

“When Martin Scorsese says that the Marvel pictures are not cinema, he’s right because we expect to learn something from cinema, we expect to gain something, some enlightenment, some knowledge, some inspiration. I don’t know that anyone gets anything out of seeing the same movie over and over again,” Coppola said (via Yahoo). “Martin was kind when he said it’s not cinema. He didn’t say it’s despicable, which I just say it is.”

There has been a lot of conversation lately about how Marvel movies and other superhero movies are changing the movie theater business for good.

Francis Ford Coppola is not the only star to slam the Marvel movie franchise.

Francis Ford Coppola hits the red carpet alongside Laurence Fishburne and Martin Sheen while hitting the red carpet at the premiere of their film Apocalypse Now: Final Cut held at ArcLight Cinerama Dome on Monday (August 12) in Hollywood.

The Oscar-winning director debuted a brand-new version of his classic film and was also joined by other leading stars Albert Hall and Frederic Forrest alongside Laurence and Martin.

This is the second time Apocalypse Now has undergone a notable update. In 2001, Francis Ford Coppola released “Apocalypse Now Redux” with 49 minutes of additional footage.

That cut was “too long,” Francis Ford Coppola said at the premiere (via USA Today), and the original was a “perhaps too short.” Now at 183 minutes, his “Final Cut,” originally prepared for this year’s Tribeca Film Festival, is “a version that I like.”

'The Beguiled' Director Sofia Coppola's Dad Francis Ford Coppola Doesn't Like Remakes

Sofia Coppola is the director of the new movie The Beguiled, but if it was up to her dad Francis Ford Coppola, the movie probably would never have been made.

The 46-year-old filmmaker just revealed that her father, the legendary director of The Godfather, does not like remakes.

Sofia adapted the screenplay for her movie from the 1971 film The Beguiled, starring Clint Eastwood.

“I always remember my dad saying, ‘No one makes a remake unless they are trying to make money; there is no reason for it.’ It was not an honorable thing to do,” Sofia told the Washington Post. “Anne Ross, my friend the production designer, she saw [the original] and she was the one who said, ‘I think you need to make a new version of that.’ Then I watched it, and it stayed in my mind. It was so weird.”

The Beguiled, starring Colin Farrell and Nicole Kidman, is in theaters now!
