Cicely Tyson Gave Her One of Final Interviews Just Days Before Her Passing

The legendary actress Cicely Tyson passed away on Thursday (January 28) and she spoke to Gayle King for CBS This Morning just days before her death.

Cicely‘s memoir “Just As I Am” was released this week and she met up with Gayle at her church in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City for a socially distanced interview.

During the interview, Cicely opened up about her career, her romances, and her legacy.

“I’m amazed every single day I live,” she said in response to being asked how it feels to be amazed. She was asked if she feels she has more to do and she responded, “Yes, that’s why I’m still here. I mean, what my life became is not what I expected. I had no idea that I would touch anybody.”

At the end of the interview, Gayle asked Cicely, “When the time comes, what do you want us to remember about you?” She responded, “I’ve done my best. That’s all.”

Gayle King's Interview with 'Soho Karen' Goes Viral

Gayle King‘s contentious interview with Miya Ponsetto, aka “Soho Karen,” is going viral.

Miya made headlines in December when she attacked a 14-year old black child at the Arlo Hotel in New York City after falsely accusing him of stealing her cell phone. She was dubbed “Soho Karen” by social media users after security footage of her assault went viral.

Miya‘s lawyer told TMZ that the assault was not racially motivated, but instead the result of an anxiety attack. Miya was arrested outside her home in California on Thursday (January 7).

Hours before her arrest, Miya sat down for an extremely tense interview with Gayle King for CBS This Morning, where she maintained that the attack was not the result of racial profiling. She told Gayle that she should have handled her the situation differently, “and maybe not yelled at him like that and made him feel some sort of inferior way and making him feel as if I was like hurting his feelings.”

“I consider myself to be super sweet,” she added. “I really never meant to hurt him or his father, either.” But when Gayle asked for clarification about what motivated the attack, Miya became increasingly defensive and told Gayle, “Alright, Gayle. Enough.”

Gayle King Is 'Worried' for Her Son's Safety: 'Welcome to Being Black in America' (Video)

Gayle King is opening up about her fears as a mother amid global protests against systemic racism and police brutality.

“It brings back memories of that day, because at the time we didn’t even know his name. We couldn’t even give him the dignity of his name. He was just a black man underneath the car. All we had seen was the knee on this neck and that was hard enough to see,” she explained.

“I start thinking about all kinds of things about that video. That’s what’s making me so emotional, that his last words were ‘Mom,’ ‘Mama.’ This is what’s getting me…it goes to the primal instinct that we all have, because your mother is your ultimate protector and his mother died two years ago. We didn’t know that at the time. When I got emotional, I didn’t know that. But we know that now.”

She went on to reflect on her own son, Will.

“My son is 33 years old, and I’m worried about him, saying, ‘Will, please don’t walk Scott [his dog], please don’t take him for long walks, everything is so volatile. He lives in the Santa Monica area, close to there, so he can hear the police choppers and he can hear the sounds of the city. And Santa Monica as you know is a very affluent town…but I’m worried about him walking his frickin’ dog…I worry for him being a black man, period.”

“I worry a lot about his safety. Welcome to being black in America. This is not new,” she added.
