Oprah Cries While Admitting Gayle King Has Gotten 'Death Threats' Over Kobe Bryant Interview Question Scandal (Video)

Oprah Winfrey is worried about her friend, Gayle King.

The 66-year-old entrepreneur made an appearance on Hoda & Jenna & Friends on Friday (February 7) to discuss the backlash Gayle‘s endured for asking Lisa Leslie about Kobe Bryant‘s rape trial in an interview, which the network teased in a promo that angered many people.

“I think the last 24 hours for your best friend have been pretty difficult after that interview with Lisa Leslie about Kobe. And I just wondered just how she’s doing,” Hoda Kotb asked.

“She is not doing well. he has now death treats and has to now travel with security and she’s feeling very much attacked. You know, Bill Cosby is tweeting from jail,” Oprah said while tearing up.

She added she “feels that she was put in a really terrible position.”

“In the context of the interview, everyone seemed fine, including Lisa Leslie. And it was only because somebody at the network put up that clip. And I can see how people would obviously be very upset if you thought that Gayle was just trying to press to get an answer from Lisa Leslie…obviously all things pass, she will be okay, but she hasn’t slept in two days.”

She went on to discuss the hate more in-depth.

“It’s not just the people who are attacking. It’s the other people who take that message and feel like they can do whatever they want to because of it, you know?”

“You know, I was on the phone with her this morning, I was on the phone with her last night, I was on the phone with her the night before. I think you stand in the gap, you try to be there for your friends. But this is very hard, because when you have social media and the force of social media, and particularly people who didn’t see either interview, making attacks.”

Here’s what Gayle King said in her defense.

Gayle conducted a thoughtful, wide-ranging interview with Lisa Leslie about the legacy of Kobe Bryant. An excerpt was posted that did not reflect the nature and tone of the full interview. We are addressing the internal process that led to this and changes have already been made,” CBS News spokesperson told E! News.

50 Cent & Snoop Dogg Attack Gayle King for Kobe Bryant Rape Question in Interview

50 Cent and Snoop Dogg are calling out Gayle King.

The stars joined some outraged fans in criticizing Gayle for bringing up the late NBA superstar’s 2003 rape case in a CBS interview, which she is called “out-of-context,” and says she is “mortified.”

Gayle interviewed recently retired WNBA star Lisa Leslie about her relationship with Kobe for CBS This Morning, and a clip of her asking about Kobe‘s rape case was put online.

Gayle King. Out of pocket for that s–t. Way out of pocket. What do you gain from that? I swear to God, we’re the worst. We’re the f–king worst. We expect more from you, Gayle. Don’t you hang out with Oprah [Winfrey]? Why ya’ll attacking us? We your people. You ain’t coming after f–king [producer] Harvey Weinstein, asking them dumbass questions. I get sick of ya’ll,” Snoop said in an angry video.

50 uploaded a video of his commentary while watching the interview clip: “It’s not complicated. You just said it was dismissed,” he reacted.

Gayle then uploaded a response video on her social media.

“I’ve been up reading the comments about the interview I did with Lisa Leslie about Kobe Bryant, and I know that if I had only seen the clip that you saw, I’d be extremely angry with me too. I am mortified. I am embarrassed and I am very angry. Unbeknownst to me, my network put up a clip from a very wide-ranging interview, totally taken out of context, and when you see it that way, it’s very jarring,” she said.

“When the interview aired, we had a great reaction to it. I talked to Lisa last night. I believe that Lisa was OK with the interview. And I felt really good about the interview. Really good about the interview. So for the network to take the most salacious part, when taken out of context, and put it up online for people who didn’t see the interview is very upsetting to me and that’s something I’m going to have to deal with with them. There will be a very intense discussion about that.”

Gayle King Defends Herself, Calls Out CBS Over Her Kobe Bryant Sexual Assault Interview

CBS This Morning co-host Gayle King has received a ton of backlash over her interview with the WNBA’s Lisa Leslie about Kobe Bryant after they touched upon his sexual assault charges from over a decade ago.

After some back-and-forth, the CBS clip shows Lisa saying to Gayle, “I think the media should be more respectful at this time. It’s like if you had questions about it, you’ve had many years to ask him that. I don’t think it’s something that we should keep hanging out his legacy.”

Well, Gayle took to Instagram this morning to defend herself, saying, “I know that if I had only seen the clip that you saw, I’d be extremely angry with me too.”

“I am mortified. I am embarrassed and I am very angry,” she added.

“Unbeknownst to me, my network put up a clip from a very wide-ranging interview — totally taken out of context — and when you see it that way, it’s very jarring. It’s jarring to me. I didn’t even know anything about it,” Gayle continued.

“We talked about that court case because that court case has also come up. And, I wanted to get Lisa’s take on it as a friend who knew him well, what she thought, where that should stand,” she added. “It was very powerful when she looked me in the eye, as a member of the media, to say, ‘It’s time for the media to leave it alone and to back off.’”

“I felt really good about the interview … so, for the network to take the most salacious part when taken out of context, and put it up online for people who didn’t see the whole interview, is very upsetting to me and that’s something I’m going to have to deal with them,” she added. “There will be a very intense discussion about that.”
