Janelle Monae Debuts Motivational Song 'Turntables' - Listen & Read the Lyrics!

Janelle Monae is looking to inspire.

The 34-year-old singer and actress debuted her new song “Turntables” on Tuesday (September 8), which will be used in Liz Garbus and Lisa Cortés‘ 2020 documentary film All In: The Fight for Democracy.

“I, like a lot of people just as humans, especially being Black in America, I’ve been experiencing a lot of trauma around seeing Black bodies murdered, like humans murdered. I struggle with talking about it because it is like a wound that we’re reopening. We’ve been screaming Black Lives Matter,” she said to Zane Lowe on Apple Music of the song.

“We’ve been understanding where our ancestors came from and the fact that I’m here not because I asked to be here, but because my ancestors were stolen and we were forced to be here. So there’s a connection between the past the present and what could be the future if we continue. And I say, as humans continue to let black people suffer. And so I’ve been emotionally debilitated, but I got an opportunity to get back into the studio to talk about or to create lyrics that [doesn't] keep us reminded of that trauma, but keep us moving forward and remind us that things are changing,” she continued.

“We are changing things. The tables are turning. The rooster has come home to roost. So this song is capturing direction. And when you think about a record, when you think about a record spinning, when you think about the revolutions per minute, it’s all connected. And that is what this song means,” she went on to explain.

“This song doesn’t mean that I’m the leader, that I’m here to tell you what to do, how to fix things. I’m simply watching, examining and wanting to highlight all of the people who are on the front lines, fighting for our democracy, fighting against racial inequalities, fighting against white supremacy, fighting against systemic racism and systemic oppression. So this song is to keep us motivated. This song is to lift up and keep us galvanized when we’re fatigued. And this song is really for the people.

Janelle Monae's Movie 'Antebellum' to Skip Theaters, Will Debut on Premium VOD

The upcoming movie Antebellum, starring Janelle Monae, will be skipping a theatrical release and it will debut on Premium Video On Demand instead.

The thriller was originally scheduled to be released in theaters in April 2020, but the release date was delayed until August 2020 when the coronavirus pandemic hit.

Now, the movie is going to be available to rent at home starting on September 18. Select international markets will get to experience the movie in theaters.

In Antebellum, successful author Veronica Henley (Monáe) finds herself trapped in a horrifying reality that forces her to confront the past, present and future – before it’s too late.

Joe Drake, the Chairman of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, said, “While the theatrical experience will always be the heart of our business, we are thrilled that we are able to seize the opportunity to match Gerard and Chris’s urgent and immediate film with a release strategy befitting this moment of extraordinary change. Gerard and Chris are storytellers whose work beats with authenticity – not only will this film entertain and thrill audiences worldwide, but spark a discussion about our current world.”

Directors Gerard Bush and Christopher Renz added, “While we designed Antebellum to be consumed as a communal experience in the theater, we are thrilled by the unique opportunity we have to pivot to a different kind of communal moment in our culture. As we face the realities of systemic racism in our country, which have crescendoed to this current inflection point in 2020, we understand how imperative it is to bring Antebellum to the broadest audience possible, while also prioritizing health and safety. It is our ardent hope that by sharing our film widely, both nationally and internationally, we will transform the moviegoing experience from home into a true event.”

Disney just announced that one of their most anticipated movies will be going to VOD in September as well.

Janelle Monae is getting candid with her feelings about the music industry.

The 34-year-old “Cold War” entertainer posted a series of messages on Twitter (July 3) expressing her frustration with misogyny in music.

“I really only ever wanna hear women rapping . The amount of misogyny from most of men in rap and music is infuriating . We need to abolish that s–t too,” she wrote.

“Women (black women inparticular) have been betrayed by the majority of men for far too long . The systems that enable Patriarchy and abusers of power are burning . Either bring gasoline or burn with them . Y’all can’t wait to call women every bitch , hoe , discuss violent acts against women, etc for clout in rap, rock, and through out music history. Misogny has NEVER been okay yet it has become normalized. Women didn’t create misogny, y’all did. SO YOU DO THE WORK to ABOLISH IT,” she went on to say.

She recently revealed that filming this movie was very triggering.
