Janelle Monae is opening up about feeling all the feelings during filming on her upcoming movie, Antebellum.

The 34-year-old entertainer spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the movie and what was going through her mind as they shot on a plantation.

“I brought all of my ancestors home with me,” Janelle shared during the roundtable discussion. “And we were filming most of the stuff at night on a plantation, and I felt everything.”

She added, “There were just certain conversations even at craft services that if I heard would be triggering for me. I couldn’t even talk to my family sometimes. It was kind of unhealthy when I think back.”

Antebellum centers on Janelle‘s character, author Veronica Henley, who, after speaking about about systemic racism, finds herself living as a slave on a plantation in the South.

Janelle Monáe is speaking out about the protests that have erupted after the George Floyd murder in late May in America.

In a profile in Variety, wants people — especially white people — to wake up.

“Because we need you. We need more people inside these places, inside these police precincts and these buildings, to stand up. And to be marching. And to be right there with us,” Janelle told the magazine. “This administration, along with the president, they’re evil.”

Meanwhile, Janelle also spoke about her role in season two of Homecoming.

“To have a Black woman and an Asian woman in a relationship on TV is the type of representation that we need,” she said, adding, “being a member of the LGBTQIA+ community is an honor.”

Janelle Monae has her hands full of sacks of food while participating in the Wondalunch Los Angeles Drive-Thru event at Crozier Middle School in Inglewood, Calif., on Friday (May 29).

The 34-year-old singer and actress teamed up with rapper and actor Jidenna, attorney and political commentator Angela Rye, and congresswoman Maxine Waters to hand out free meals to those in need, in a partnership with hunger nonprofit Project Isaiah.

“Some people who are working may want to save their money because they don’t know when they may be laid off,” Janelle shared in an interview about the giveaway. “This is an opportunity to give back to the community, to feed families, to hopefully release some stress.”

Anything left over from the drive, which catered 10,000 lunches, was given to homeless shelters.

“I knew that taking on this role was going to take a lot of deep diving emotionally,” Janelle told Vanity Fair. “This role is the hardest role that I’ve done, because it directly connects the past, present, and the future.”

She went on, “I went back and forth with, Should I do this? People are gonna think I’m crazy. It wasn’t until I did some deep meditation—and I saw so many women that reminded me of Veronica, from Maxine Waters to AOC to all of the strong women in our government—that I said, Yes, I should do this. This scares me, and the conversations need to be had because our past will directly determine our future.”

The movie also stars alongside Kiersey Clemons, Gabourey Sidibe, Jack Huston, and more.
