12 Celebrities Who Were Fired From TV & Movies Amid Controversy

Tonight, Lucasfilm announced that Gina Carano would not be returning for Disney+’s The Mandalorian after her controversial social media posts went viral.

The actress came under fire after re-posting something from another account that compared the treatment of conservatives in the United States to how Jewish people were treated in Germany during the Nazi era.

“Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future,” a rep for Lucasfilm confirmed in a statement.

However, Gina isn’t exactly the first actor to be fired from their television show amid controversy.

There have been many before her and we’ve complied a list of the 12 most controversial exits from television and movies in our slideshow.

Will Smith & Janet Hubert Finally End Their 27-Year Feud After Her Departure From 'Fresh Prince'

Will Smith and Janet Hurbert are together again!

The two reunited during HBO Max’s The Fresh Prince of Bel Air reunion special for the first time in 27 years after Janet left her role as Aunt Viv on the hit sitcom.

If you didn’t know, Janet played Aunt Viv during the first three seasons of Fresh Prince. She left the show in 1993 citing “creative differences” and was replaced by Daphne Maxwell Reid.

After her departure, the two battled very publicly, with Will telling a Atlanta radio station shortly after her departure that Janet “wanted the show to be The Aunt Viv of Bel-Air Show…She’s mad now but she’s been mad all along.”

Almost a decade ago, Janet told TMZ there would “never” be a reunion, calling Will an “a–hole” and an “egomaniac,” and “this constant reunion thing will never ever happen in my lifetime unless there is an apology, which he doesn’t know the word,” reportedly blaming him for her premature departure from the show in 1993.

Despite their differences, Will and Janet decided to finally sit down and clear the air.

“I don’t know your story,” Will says to Janet.

“I know, you have no idea. It was insane,” Janet responded, before clarifying that she was not fired from the show despite what was reported at the time.

“They offered me this really bad deal in the third season. They said, ‘You’ve got two months and two weeks of work and you cannot work anywhere else,’” Janet recalled. “So that meant my salary was cut. I had a new baby and a husband who was out of work, so I said no. I did not accept their offer.”

“I was never fired, but the misconception was always put out there,” Janet continued. “I was trapped — what could I do? They said, ‘Okay, then we’re going to recast your role,’ and I said, ‘What can I say?’ I was hurt, deeply.”

Janet went on to tell Will that his words after her departure from Fresh Prince really hurt her and her career. She also explained that her difficulties on set had nothing to do with the cast, but it was more about being in a “very abusive marriage.”

“I have children, I’ve been divorced, I’ve had a second marriage,” Will responded. “And I can see now the level of pain and the level of struggle that it was for you just to show up every day.”

“I lost everything — reputation, everything — and I understand you were able to move forward, but you know those words — calling a Black woman difficult in Hollywood is the kiss of death,” Janet said. “And it’s hard enough being a dark-skinned Black woman in this business.”

She also explained why she wanted to patch things up with Will, saying, “I felt it was necessary for us to finally move forward, and I’m sorry that I have blasted you to pieces.”

Will then responded, “First of all, thank you for sharing that with me. I didn’t know that, when I look back now it’s obvious that you were having a hard time and I felt like you hated me. I could not do a 30-year celebration of this show and not celebrate you, celebrate your contribution to the show, celebrate your contribution to my life.”

In a solo interview, Janet discussed the sit-down with Will, saying, “I have to say, after 27 years, being here today and having the conversation that Will and I had together — it’s healing. I didn’t come here to have animosity, I came here to resolve, ’cause it’s time.”

Will Smith Ends Nearly 30 Year Feud With 'Fresh Prince' Original Aunt Viv Actress Janet Hubert

Will Smith and Janet Hubert are seemingly putting some drama to bed after nearly 30 years.

“Today (Thursday) is exactly 30 YEARS since The @FreshPrince of Bel-Air debuted! So we’re doin’ something for y’all… a for real Banks Family Reunion is comin’ soon to @HBOmax! RIP James,” he wrote. (James Avery played uncle Philip Banks, and died in 2013.)

Fans noticed that he and Janet, who played the original Aunt Vivian on the show before being replaced by Daphne Reid, were laughing together in a photo, which is a surprise.

It seems they’ve patched things up based on the photos, and Janet even reposted the pictures.

“Reunited and it feels so good!” she wrote, adding in the hashtags that God spoke to her, and she’s “#freeatlast.”

The two sat down on Wednesday (September 10) according to HBO for an “emotional reunion and a candid conversation,” which even came as a surprise to the cast. Find out more about the reunion special!

Fresh Prince's Janet Hubert Slams Will & Jada Pinkett-Smith's Oscars 2016 Boycott Again

Will Smith‘s former Fresh Prince of Bel-Air co-star Janet Hubert called out him and his wife Jada Pinkett-Smith‘s Oscars 2016 boycott earlier in the week, and she’s not holding anything back in this new interview.

“The Smiths just irked me because they are such pretenders and everything is a photo op. It’s just self-contrived because her hubby didn’t get a nomination,” the 60-year-old actress told the Los Angeles Times about the 47-year-old actor and 44-year-old actress.

“I was looking at this ridiculousness people called a historic moment and I was annoyed,” Janet continued. “I was annoyed because it dilutes the movement when you only stand up for yourself. Y’all are at your mansion in a gilded cage, standing up there with billions of dollars in the bank. You could do more for the industry and for black Hollywood than anyone could. You could be mentoring young screenwriters. You could be setting up a program. You have the ability to do so much.”

“There are actors who have never gotten an Oscar and have done amazing work. If you are waiting for an award of a little … gold statue and that’s supposed to validate you, then you’re not in this business for the right reasons. We do the work. It’s about the work. It’s about taking the pages of a script and bringing them to life. It ain’t that deep. We get paid a lot of money to do very little work,” Janet added.

Will Smith's 'Fresh Prince' Co-Star Janet Hubert Slams Jada Pinkett-Smith's Oscars Boycott (Video)

Janet Hubert, who played Will Smith‘s Aunt Vivian on Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, is slamming Jada Pinkett-Smith for her 2016 Oscars boycott.

The 60-year-old actress uploaded a video to YouTube where she shared her sentiments. Warning: this video contains NSFW language.

“I’ve been trying to figure out: Do I really want to do this? Yeah, I do. Today, being the celebration of Martin Luther King’s birthday and hitting 60 years old…I want to say something to Jada Pinkett Smith asking other black actors to boycott the Oscars. First of all, Miss Thing: Does your man not have a mouth of his own with which to speak?” Janet said.

“The second thing, girlfriend, there’s a lot of s— going on in the world that you all don’t seem to recognize. People are dying. Our boys are being shot left and right. People are hungry. People are starving. People are trying to pay bills,” the actress continued. “And you’re talking about some motherf—ing actors and Oscars. It just ain’t that deep,” she continued.

“Here’s the other thing, for you to ask other actors to jeopardize their careers…You know damn well, you don’t do that,” Janet added in her rant. “They don’t care! I find it ironic that somebody who has made their living and made millions and millions of dollars from the very people [who are doing this]…That is not the way life works, baby. It’s very suspect to me.”
