Dax Shepard Reflects on Breaking His 16-Year Sobriety in 2020, Feels 'Guilty' Saying He 'Loved This Year Immensely'

Dax Shepard used his podcast, Armchair Expert podcast, to speak out about his 2020 relapse after 16 years of sobriety.

“I can’t imagine having to admit that to other people and feeling as safe as I did that you guys wouldn’t hate me,” Dax said to his wife Kristen Bell and his co-host Monica Padman. “I hated me at that point and so, to be able to tell you guys and feel unconditionally loved and that I would be accepted was really special.”

He added, “It saved my life.”

“Nobody saved you but you,” Kristen said, “and your courage and boldness to say, ‘I feel like I’m slipping’ or ‘I did slip and I need to be honest before it gets worse’ and I’m just grateful to all parties involved. I think we did a really good job, team.”

“I feel really grateful and honored that you felt you could trust me,” she added. “I feel grateful that I was allowed in to the inner circle.”

Dax then said something sorta shocking. “I feel guilty saying this, but I still loved this year immensely,” he said. “I loved this year. I had a great year.”

“I think we’re very lucky to say that,” she said, adding, “because we’re not out of work and we’re not looking at eviction and we’re not struggling to put food on the table.”

“I’m saying though even with two surgeries and a relapse and shame spiral and all this stuff, still a great year for me,” Dax said.

Kristen opened up about her husband’s sobriety several years ago. Here’s what she said at the time.

During the podcast, she explained that she is so candid about her life because it gives her “peace of mind.”

“Peace of mind with my own authenticity, I think is the best way to describe it,” she explained, saying Dax inspired her to be more candid.

“And what’s funny is — this is what I say is the most annoying part of my husband, he’s almost always right. When I say almost always, I mean like really almost always. It’s so annoying,” she went on to say.

She went on to explain that Dax was the one to encourage her to speak up about her anxiety and depression.

“My husband was like, yeah, talk about that. And I realized I had been presenting this like, bubbly individual, and it just wasn’t the full story. It didn’t have the dimension. And I felt this sickening wave of fraudulence and inauthenticity, and I went on and I brought it up.”

“I want to be the person who talks honestly and says, ‘I get what I present to you, it’s not always the case.’ So if you’re feeling that too, just know that I’m right here with you,” she went on to say.

Dax Shepard was recently very brave when he revealed this about himself.

Kristen Bell Reveals the Reason Why She Won't Post Her Kids' Faces on Social Media

Kristen Bell and her husband Dax Shepard are parents to Lincoln, 7, and Delta, 5, but they have never shown their faces on social media.

Now, Kristen is explaining why her kids haven’t been seen on social media.

“My feeling is that I chose a career in the public eye. I chose to be quoted, I chose to have my picture taken,” Kristen told Romper. “I don’t know them yet. I don’t know if they will want that. So I really don’t have the right to choose for them.” So perhaps you will see their faces one day, if they choose to share!

Kristen did share a pic of one of her kids on social a few months ago but check out how she hid her face from the public.

Frozen's Kristen Bell & Jonathan Groff Reunite for Another Musical!

Frozen couple Kristen Bell and Jonathan Groff are reuniting for another movie musical!

The new movie is titled Molly and the Moon, and will see Kristen as Kate, Molly’s mom, while Jonathan will play Molly’s dad Brian. The film is about a “couple who are expecting a child and sing to their unborn baby in the womb. But the film also takes us inside the womb and imagines a little girl in a rowboat singing back and using the sound of her parents’ voices to try and reach ‘the moon,’ or a metaphor for being born,” according to The Wrap.

The story is based on Craig‘s real life son, Elliot, who was born with Jacobsen Syndrome, a rare genetic condition that caused him and his wife to not be able to hold him after his birth due to an urgent heart surgery. The couple sang to their son instead.

You can listen to Jonathan and Kristen sing together right here!

Kristen Bell Speaks Out For First Time About Dax Shepard's Relapse: 'I Will Continue To Stand By Him'

Kristen Bell is opening up about husband Dax Shepard‘s recent relapse in the new episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, airing Wednesday (October 14).

The 40-year-old Good Place actress revealed just how Dax told her about his relapse and their new plan going forward.

“He is actually doing really great. … Everybody is up against their own demons,” Kristen shared in the clip, via People. “Sometimes it’s anxiety and depression. Sometimes it’s substance abuse.”

Kristen continued, “The thing I love most about Dax is … that he was able to tell me and tell us and say, ‘We need a different plan.’ We have a plan: if he has to take medication for any reason, I have to administer it. But he was like, ‘We need a stronger plan.’”

She recalled him telling her that he “‘was faltering. I have to do some sort of emotional work to figure out why I wanted to use again.’”

“He was like, ‘I don’t want to risk this family and I did, so let’s put new things in place to make sure it doesn’t happen again,’” Kristen added.

Now, they have a new plan and that involves going back to therapy, and her continuing to stand by his side.

“I will continue to stand by him because he’s very, very worth it,” Kristen said.

Dax opened up about his relapse in a recent episode of his Armchair Expert podcast.
