'Lord of the Rings' Amazon Series to Be Most Expensive TV Show Ever Made - See the Estimated Cost!

The Lord of the Rings is going to be huge.

The forthcoming fantasy series at Amazon Studios will cost even more than previous estimates, THR reported Friday (April 16).

Amazon will spend roughly NZ$650 million, or $465 million in U.S. dollars, for the first season of the show, according to the report, beating out the previous estimate of $500 million for multiple seasons of the show.

“What I can tell you is Amazon is going to spend about $650 million in season one alone. This is fantastic, it really is…this will be the largest television series ever made,” said Stuart Nash, New Zealand Minister for Economic Development and Tourism, to Morning Report.

The estimate was released as part of the New Zealand government’s Official Information Act, initially reported by Stuff.

The documents also revealed that Amazon plans to film five seasons in New Zealand, as well as potential spinoff series.

'Lord of the Rings' TV Series Cuts Tom Budge - Read His Explanation of What Happened

Amazon is working on turning the epic book series The Lord of the Rings into a television series and a previously announced cast member just revealed he has been cut from the show.

Tom Budge was among the many actors announced to be in the show back in January 2020, but he says he has departed the series due to creative reasons.

“Hello loves, It is with great sadness that I am writing to tell you I have departed Amazon’s Lord Of The Rings television series. After recently seeing the first episodes shot over the last year Amazon has decided to go in another direction with the character I was portraying,” Tom wrote on Instagram.

He continued, “I must thank the creative team for their encouragement towards trying something that I believed was new, exciting and beautiful. And I sincerely thank the extraordinary cast and crew for their love, support and friendship over what has been a very difficult and unusual experience. Alas, some things just cannot be. Destiny my mother, I thank thee.”

The upcoming series is going to take place hundreds of years before the events in the Peter Jackson film series, so it’s unknown who Tom was going to be playing.

An official synopsis for the upcoming series was released a couple months ago.

Amazon Reveals Synopsis for 'Lord of the Rings' Series, Teases Major Character's Return!

Amazon is sharing new information about the upcoming Lord of the Rings series!

The streaming service has released the the official synopsis for the upcoming series, which is expected to debut in late 2021 or early 2022.

Here’s the synopsis obtained by TheOneRing.net: “Amazon Studios’ forthcoming series brings to screens for the very first time the heroic legends of the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth’s history. This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness.”

“Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.”

While it hasn’t officially been confirmed yet, it looks like Sauron – the Dark Lord who rose to power during the Second Age – could be returning for the series, as many fans believe he is the “greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen” described in the synopsis.

Last month, the Lord of the Rings series announced 20 new actors joining the cast!

Together, the cast happily recalled stories from the set of the film franchise, with lots of laughter and memories.

The stream was in support of No Kid Hungry.

“We all know the implications of COVID-19 are far reaching, but we may not realize how school closures and economic stressors are significantly increasing childhood hunger rates in the U.S. The problem is two-fold as new financial strains make it harder for families to provide meals for their kids and food access programs that previously provided in-school meals need to quickly shift the way they operate. To help address this crisis, we humbly ask you to support No Kid Hungry, a national campaign focused on ending childhood hunger in America,” Josh wrote.
