Mads Mikkelsen Won't Be Playing 'Fantastic Beasts' Gellert Grindelwald The Same Way as Johnny Depp

Mads Mikkelsen is taking over the role of Gellert Grindelwald in the next Fantastic Beasts movie, replacing Johnny Depp, who played the iconic character for the past two films.

In a recent interview with Total Film, the 55-year-old Danish actor is revealing what the transition will be like and how he’s making his Grindelwald different from Johnny‘s portrayal.

“This is obviously a more direct comparison because it’s the next film,” he shared with the magazine. “So we have done a few bridges that will allow us to recognize it, but we’ve also said we have to make it our own.”

Mads added that mirroring Johnny‘s intensity in his own performance wasn’t going to work.

“I have been a fan of Johnny Depp since I saw him as a young man, and to try to bring his intensity and his way of doing it into my work is a no-go,” he said. “I have to find my own, because his is unique, and I just have to let that be, and find a different path.”

This isn’t the first time Mads has opened up about taking over the role. See what he said earlier this year…

'Another Round' Director Thomas Vinterberg Defends The Possible Remake With Leonardo DiCaprio

Thomas Vinterberg is opening up about the news about remaking Another Round with Leonardo DiCaprio.

The Danish director, who recently picked up the Oscar for Best International Feature Film for the same movie, is defending the remake.

The movie involves “four teacher pals in midlife crisis who decide to experiment with raising their blood alcohol levels as a way to make life more interesting. While they initially are exacting about their levels, things progressively get out of hand for some of them.

The original movie starred Mads Mikkelsen, and Thomas doesn’t think Mads would do it again.

Mads Mikkelsen Reveals That There Was Almost A Kiss Between Him & Hugh Dancy on 'Hannibal'

Mads Mikkelsen is looking back on Hannibal, which he starred as the title character from 2013 to 2015 on NBC.

The 55-year-old actor opened up in a new interview about the role and even more about the almost romance between Hannibal and Will Graham, played by Hugh Dancy.

He told Vulture that he and Hugh were both on board for a romance between the two and they both wanted to kiss in the season 3 finale, which ultimately became the series finale.

“We actually did a couple of takes of the very last scene where we were looking at each other, and it was a little too obvious — it was almost a kiss,” Mads recalled. “Me and Hugh were like, ‘Why not? We have a couple of takes. Let’s do one. It might be cool.””

However, it never happened.

“We never went for the kiss. Bryan [Fuller, showrunner] loved it, but he was like, ‘Too much, guys. It’s too obvious.’ And he was absolutely right.”

Mads continued, “I think we were just stuck on that. And a lot of the Fannibals wanted it as well. It’s been a subject of homoerotic fan art. And for good reason, because they are so united as twins in many ways. But we never wanted it to be a physical thing. It was something much bigger than that.”

Just recently, Mads signed on to star in this adventure film!

Mads Mikkelsen Opens Up About Taking Over Johnny Depp's Role in 'Fantastic Beasts'

Mads Mikkelsen is discussing his new role.

The 55-year-old actor spoke out in a profile for WSJ. Magazine.

Here’s what he had to say…

On taking over Johnny Depp’s role in the Fantastic Beasts franchise: “I don’t feel constrained at all. I think it would be creative suicide if I tried to copy what Johnny did. It’s also very specific. He’s a wonderful actor that nobody can copy, so trying to would be insane. Obviously, I have to find my own path.”

On the role his kids thought was the coolest, starring in Rihanna’s “Bitch Better Have My Money” music video: “Yes, I was the bitch. But I never knew quite why or how I became the bitch…that made me go off on the cool meter among my kids. Bond— fine, OK. Star Wars movie—kind of OK. But working with Rihanna—just top-notch. You know, I might need to get in another video soon.”

On what he does on a night off: “There is a game in Europe called handball, which is very big. Denmark is in the world championships, and we’re reigning champions. So I’m going to watch that tonight. Everyone in the country follows it. It’s like—don’t ask me to explain it. Just watch it. It’s much easier.”

Here’s what he said when asked if he’s spoken to Johnny Depp.

Mads Mikkelsen Reveals If He's Spoken to Johnny Depp About 'Fantastic Beasts'

Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen was recently confirmed as the replacement for Johnny Depp‘s character Grindelwald in the upcoming Fantastic Beasts 3 and now he’s opening up about playing the role.

In an interview with AP Entertainment, Mads confirmed that he has not spoken to Johnny about taking the role.

“No, I don’t know him,” he said (via The Independent). “I’ve met him once. I wish I had his phone number, but unfortunately that’s not the case.”

He added, “There’s nothing else I can do, to be honest. The only approach I can have is connect the bridge between what he did and what I’m gonna do and then we’ll see what lands.”

Mads previously discussed the film and said, “Job wise, it’s obviously super interesting and nice. It’s also a shocker that it came after what happened, which is just super sad. I wish both of them the best. These are sad circumstances.”

Find out how much money Johnny is making for Fantastic Beasts 3, even though he only filmed one scene that won’t be used.
