Mark Zuckerberg is banning the President of the United States.

Following the breach of the U.S. Capitol by Trump loyalists on Wednesday (January 6), the Facebook founder issued a statement confirming that Trump‘s divisive rhetoric will no longer be allowed to be shared on Facebook and Instagram.

“The shocking events of the last 24 hours clearly demonstrate that President Donald Trump intends to use his remaining time in office to undermine the peaceful and lawful transition of power to his elected successor, Joe Biden,” he wrote.

“His decision to use his platform to condone rather than condemn the actions of his supporters at the Capitol building has rightly disturbed people in the US and around the world. We removed these statements yesterday because we judged that their effect — and likely their intent — would be to provoke further violence,” he continued.

“Following the certification of the election results by Congress, the priority for the whole country must now be to ensure that the remaining 13 days and the days after inauguration pass peacefully and in accordance with established democratic norms. Over the last several years, we have allowed President Trump to use our platform consistent with our own rules, at times removing content or labeling his posts when they violate our policies,” he said.

“We did this because we believe that the public has a right to the broadest possible access to political speech, even controversial speech. But the current context is now fundamentally different, involving use of our platform to incite violent insurrection against a democratically elected government. We believe the risks of allowing the President to continue to use our service during this period are simply too great. Therefore, we are extending the block we have placed on his Facebook and Instagram accounts indefinitely and for at least the next two weeks until the peaceful transition of power is complete.”

Trump recently told his supporters to “go home” while also reiterating his unproven claim that the election was rigged. He further fanned the flames of dissent among his supporters by criticizing Vice President Pence for not bowing to pressure to overturn the presidential election results.

Selena Gomez went straight to the leadership of Facebook and Instagram to combat the hate and racism issues on the social media platforms.

The 28-year-old singer and actress shared a private message she had written to Mark Zuckerberg and COO Sheryl Sandberg on her own Instagram Stories.

“Facebook and Instagram are being used to spread hate, misinformation, racism, and bigotry,” Selena wrote in the message. “I am calling you both to HELP STOP THIS.”

She added, “Please shut down groups and users focused on spreading hate speech violence and misinformation. Our future depends on it.”

Selena also stressed the importance of acting now, given the election is less than 50 days away

“We cannot afford to have misinformation about voting,” she continued. “There has to be fact-checking and accountability. Hope to hear back from you ASAP.”

Mark Zuckerberg is staying very, very safe while out in the sun.

The 36-year-old Facebook CEO recently went surfing on his electric surfboard in Hawaii while wearing A LOT of sunscreen on his face. You can see the photo of Mark at New York Post here.

Shortly after the photos went viral, people took to Twitter to poke some fun at Mark.

People compared Mark‘s white face to Batman villain the Joker, and even pointed out that in an old episode of the Batman TV series that the Joker (played by actor Cesar Romero) even went surfing in one episode.

Mark isn’t the only celebrity that was spotted out while wearing layers of sunscreen. This actor recently loaded up on sunblock during a day out in L.A.

Mark Zuckerberg, the founder and CEO of Facebook, has announced that his company will be matching up to $20 million in donations made to combat coronavirus.

The 35-year-old businessman put up a post on his Facebook page that says the company will match up to $10 million to their COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund and also $10 million for the Center for Disease Control Foundation.

“A lot of people have told us they want to help fight coronavirus but aren’t sure how, so we’ve worked with the United Nations Foundation and the World Health Organization to start a COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund, where anyone can go to make a donation,” Mark wrote on his page. “Facebook is matching up to $10 million in donations, and 100% of funds will directly support the work to prevent, detect and respond to the outbreak around the world. We’ll also match $10 million for the Center for Disease Control Foundation, which will launch a fundraiser in the next few weeks focused on combating the outbreak here in the US.”

“Thanks to everyone who is working to minimize the impact of the pandemic. More to come soon,” he concluded.

Facebook is getting into the crypto-currency game.

The social network platform plans to set up a digital payment system, which is being called GlobalCoin internally, in about a dozen countries by the first quarter of 2020, according to the BBC.

Detailed plans for the currency are expected to be outlined this summer. Founder Mark Zuckerberg reportedly already met with Bank of England governor Mark Carney to discuss opportunities and risks.

Facebook’s plan is to create a digital currency that provides affordable and secure ways of making payments, regardless of whether a user has a bank account, enabling people to change their currency into digital coins.

They are also in talks with online merchants to accept the currency as payment in exchange for lower transaction fees.

Concerns include security, especially considering Facebook’s recent personal data breaches. The U.S. Senate & Banking Committee also penned an open letter to Mark to ask how the currency will work, and how consumers will be protected and secured.

The move follows Facebook’s Credits program a decade ago, which allowed people to buy items in apps on the site. The program closed after less than two years.

Mark Zuckerberg has finally spoken after news broke that Cambridge Analytica took data from millions of Facebook users.

If you don’t know, Cambridge Analytica is a data analysis firm that was used by Donald Trump during his presidential campaign for voter-targeting services. Apparently, 50 million accounts were targeted.

“We have a responsibility to protect your data, and if we can’t then we don’t deserve to serve you,” Mark said after a ton of backlash. “I’ve been working to understand exactly what happened and how to make sure this doesn’t happen again. The good news is that the most important actions to prevent this from happening again today we have already taken years ago. But we also made mistakes, there’s more to do, and we need to step up and do it.”

“I started Facebook, and at the end of the day I’m responsible for what happens on our platform. I’m serious about doing what it takes to protect our community. While this specific issue involving Cambridge Analytica should no longer happen with new apps today, that doesn’t change what happened in the past. We will learn from this experience to secure our platform further and make our community safer for everyone going forward,” Mark continued. “I want to thank all of you who continue to believe in our mission and work to build this community together. I know it takes longer to fix all these issues than we’d like, but I promise you we’ll work through this and build a better service over the long term.”
