Novak Djokovic kisses his award while posing backstage at the 2019 Laureus World Sports Awards on Monday (February 18) in Monaco.

The 31-year-old tennis player, who was joined at the event by his wife Jelena, made a surprising revelation while accepting the Laureus Sportsman of the Year Award.

Novak says he almost retired from tennis while dealing with injuries last year.

“I did think about leaving tennis,” he said (via Yahoo). “I did not find myself in a good balance. It took me several months to find that purpose and meaning again.”

“This award reflects and symbolizes this journey. Reflecting on it standing here now it seems like a fairy-tale story but it tells me one thing,” Novak added. “In those moments of when you are facing adversity and challenged you should always look inside. I did not understand that fully before but now I know where I can always find strength and belief and to keep on going.”

Tennis star Novak Djokovic goes for a run wearing nothing but his speedo, his cap, and his sneakers earlier this month on the beach in Marbella, Spain.

The 31-year-old athlete later went for a shirtless dip in the ocean after changing into a different pair of swimwear.

If you don’t know, the US Open kicks off today (August 27), and Novak will be competing in the annual tournament. His first match is set for Tuesday (August 28), where he’ll be taking on Hungary’s Márton Fucsovics.

At the event, the 31-year-old tennis pro opened up about his recent resurgence. “It surprised us all, to be honest,” Novak told the New York Post. “There’s always part of me [that thinks] I can win every tournament I play in. But it came a bit early for the team’s plan for the big picture. The plan was to peak at the U.S. Open. I’m very ready.”

Novak Djokovic has admitted that he’s still looking to perfect his serve!

“I’m still a work in progress with the serve, to be honest,” the 31-year-old tennis pro expressed while attending A Conversation With Novak Djokovic at the ASICS 5th Ave Flagship Store on Wednesday (August 22) in New York City.

“I’m aware that I can’t serve as the guys who are 6ft 10in obviously can,” Novak added. “I’m not looking for that speed – I’m looking more for precision and accuracy.”

“I am grateful for where I am at the moment and I couldn’t be in a better place before the last Grand Slam of the year,” Novak continued. “I do feel like I am playing close to my best, I still feel I can play better. In the finals against Roger [Federer] it was definitely the best match of the tournament.”

The 34-year-old tennis pro was joined by women’s singles champion Angelique Kerber and, as tradition dictates, the pair danced together in front of those in attendance.

Novak ended up winning the match, securing his 13th grand slam title, his fourth at Wimbledon, winning 6-2, 6-2, 7-6. Congrats to Novak and Angelique on their wins!

Tom Hiddleston, Tom Holland, Eddie Redmayne and more were seated in the audience to watch the big match.

Novak Djokovic had some fun as a guest on The Late Late Show with James Corden on Tuesday (November 7) in Los Angeles.

The 30-year-old 12-time Grand Slam champion played a game of “Target Practice,” naturally, with host James dressed up as a ball with a water bottle on his head.

“I have a big target,” Novak joked alongside his fellow guests Rainn Wilson and comedian Jack Whitehall.

The skit was a bit of a cop-out as they were using soft red balls and James tried to lower his chances of getting hit but using Novak‘s arm injury to his advantage. “Because of your injury, we’re going to have you serve with your left hand,” James insisted.
