'A Quiet Place 2,' 'Top Gun 2,' & 'Spider-Man 3' All Have Been Delayed Due to the Pandemic

The movie release calendar keeps getting switched around due to the coronavirus pandemic and three highly anticipated films were just delayed.

Emily Blunt‘s A Quiet Place 2 was originally supposed to hit theaters back in March and then it was delayed to Labor Day weekend when the pandemic began. Now, the film has been pushed back until April 23, 2021.

Tom Cruise‘s Top Gun: Maverick was scheduled to be released on December 23, 2020, but fans will have to wait another six months as the release date has been pushed back to July 2, 2021.

Another major film that has been delayed is Tom Holland‘s third Spider-Man movie, which was previously scheduled for November 5, 2021. Now that Avatar 2 has vacated the December 17, 2021 slot, Spider-Man 3 has moved to that date.

Disney has announced a TON of new release dates for their upcoming movies, including Mulan, the Star Wars franchise, and the four upcoming Avatar sequels.

'Top Gun: Maverick' Director Joseph Kosinski Talks Film's Delay & New Release Date

Joseph Kosinski is opening up about the delay of the release of the Tom Cruise led Top Gun: Maverick.

Speaking to ComicBook.com, the director shared his disappointment, and is sharing just where he is working on the post-production of the movie.

“We’re sticking to our schedule and finishing the movie just as if it were coming out on its original release date,” Joseph shared. “Luckily, I’m in the home stretch of post-production where, despite all the restrictions of how you can work now, I’m able to continue doing my job and finish the movie, which is pretty amazing.”

He adds, “If I were in any other phase of the project, it would be hard to do that, but because I’m in the tail-end of post, I’m able to do everything I need to to be able to to finish it.”

Joseph also opened up about saving it for the big screen instead of a VOD release.

“We’re sticking to our schedule and finishing the movie and just holding it for six months, which is such an interesting thing to do but it’s the right decision because this is a movie that people need to see on the big screen and if there’s no big screen, then you don’t want to release this movie,” he said. “We want this to be a shared experience on as big a screen as possible.”

Top Gun: Maverick is now slated to release on December 23. See the trailer here!

As part of the campaign, he also participated in a Q&A about his role in Top Gun, as well as his sense of style.

“My dad introduced me to it when I was 10. I think for fathers and sons the movie is sort of like teaching your kid baseball. Every dad wants to pass it along. Right after watching it, I signed up for acting classes. There’s probably three movies that are responsible for me being an actor and Top Gun is at the top,” he said of the film franchise.

He also said the best part of the experience was “getting to work with Tom Cruise. I basically got Tom Cruise film school every day on set. He’d tell me to watch a movie, I’d watch it that night and then we’d talk about it the next day. For an entire year I got to learn how he makes movies.”
