'Maleficent' Sequel Opens Below Box Office Expectations, 'Zombieland 2' Off to Strong Start

Angelina Jolie‘s new movie Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is now in theaters and the film opened at number one, though below box office expectations.

The movie earned $36 million in North America during its first weekend, which is just half of what the first Maleficent movie made in its opening. Box office experts had previously predicted that the movie would open with about $45 million for the first weekend.

Coming in second place this weekend was Joker in its third weekend with an additional $29.2 million for a total of $247 million so far.

Zombieland: Double Tap opened with a strong $26.725 million for its first weekend for a third place finish, which is just about on par with the first film’s opening.

Opening in limited release this weekend were Robert Pattinson‘s The Lighthouse and Taika Waititi‘s Jojo Rabbit, which both had strong openings.

Emma Stone, Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg & More Reuniting for 'Zombieland 2'!

Zombieland 2 is a go, and the original cast and crew is reuniting for the sequel!

The exciting news was confirmed on Friday (July 13) by The Hollywood Reporter.

Nearly a decade after the original Zombieland, Emma Stone, Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg and Abigail Breslin are all set to return for the follow-up.

The movie will be directed by the original director, Ruben Fleischer. The original writers, Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, are returning too.

The new movie will “once again put the focus on comic mayhem, taking the quartet from the White House to the American heartland as they face off against new kinds of zombies that have evolved since the first movie, as well as some new human survivors. But, most of all, according to the studio, they have to face the growing pains of their own snarky, makeshift family.”

The film will begin production in January 2019 and will be released in October 2019, just in time for the horror-comedy franchise’s 10th anniversary.

“This is one of those projects that fans have wanted to see happen for a long time – and no one wanted to see it happen more than Emma, Woody, Jesse and Abigail,” said Columbia Pictures president Sanford Panitch.

“These are some of the most in-demand actors and I think they are making this movie because they love these characters. We are thrilled Ruben was willing to come back to direct the sequel, as his work on Venom has been truly amazing.”
