Taylor Swift Confirms Boyfriend Joe Alwyn Is Secret 'Folklore' Collaborator!

Taylor Swift is confirming a heavily speculated fan theory.

The 30-year-old singer-songwriter revealed that her 29-year-old boyfriend, Joe Alwyn, is actually the “William Bowery” credited on her latest studio album during her Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions special that debuted on Disney+ on Wednesday (November 25).

During the special, filmed in upstate New York in September alongside co-executive producers Jack Antonoff and Aaron Dessner, she opened up about Joe‘s contributions to her song “Exile” with Bon Iver and “Betty.”
“There’s been a lot of discussion about William Bowery and his identity ’cause it’s not a real person,” she explained.

“So, William Bowery is Joe, as we know. And Joe plays piano beautifully, and he’s just always playing and making things up and kind of creating things…’Exile’ was crazy because Joe had written that entire piano part and was singing the Bon Iver part. He was just singing it, the way that the whole first verse is. So I was entranced and asked if we could keep writing that one. It was pretty obvious that it should be a duet because he’s got such a low voice and it sounded really good sung down there in that register.”

She also talked about his contribution to “Betty.”

“I just heard Joe singing the entire fully formed chorus of ‘Betty’ from another room and it was just like, ‘Hello’. It was a step that we would have never taken because why would we have ever written a song together?” she said.

“So this was the first time we had a conversation where I came in and was like ‘Hey, this could be really weird and we could hate this, so because we’re in quarantine and there’s nothing else going on, could we just try and see what it’s like if we write this song together?’”

She also recently confirmed her own songwriting pseudonym when writing tracks for others.

Taylor Swift Opens Up About Balancing Her Relationship With Joe Alwyn & Fame

During their chat, Taylor discussed the meaning behind one of her folklore songs, “Peace,” which includes the lyric “give you my wild, give you my child.

“‘Peace’ is actually more rooted in my personal life. I know you have done a really excellent job of this in your personal life: carving out a human life within a public life, and how scary that can be when you do fall in love and you meet someone, especially if you’ve met someone who has a very grounded, normal way of living. I, oftentimes, in my anxieties, can control how I am as a person and how normal I act and rationalize things, but I cannot control if there are 20 photographers outside in the bushes and what they do and if they follow our car and if they interrupt our lives. I can’t control if there’s going to be a fake weird headline about us in the news tomorrow,” she said.

When Sir Paul asked if her partner sympathizes with the struggle, Taylor said “Oh, absolutely.”

“But I think that in knowing him and being in the relationship I am in now, I have definitely made decisions that have made my life feel more like a real life and less like just a storyline to be commented on in tabloids. Whether that’s deciding where to live, who to hang out with, when to not take a picture — the idea of privacy feels so strange to try to explain, but it’s really just trying to find bits of normalcy. That’s what that song ‘Peace’ is talking about. Like, would it be enough if I could never fully achieve the normalcy that we both crave? Stella [McCartney] always tells me that she had as normal a childhood as she could ever hope for under the circumstances.”

Taylor Swift's 'The Lakes' Seemingly Reveals Details About Her Relationship With Joe Alwyn

Taylor Swift seems to be inviting her fans into her personal life a bit more.

The folklore singer released the lyric video for “The Lakes,” a bonus track on her latest studio album.

Due to all of the songs about heartbreak on the album, some fans wondered if there was trouble between herself and Joe Alwyn. However, the new song seems to make several sweet references to the actor.

Take me to the lakes, where all the poets went to die / I don’t belong and, my beloved, neither do you / Those Windermere peaks look like a perfect place to cry / I’m setting off, but not without my muse,” she sings on the track.

The “Windermere” line seemingly references England’s largest natural lake, and the couple’s spent a lot of time together in England, so it seems like a reference to their time in the country.

And I want you right here / A red rose grew up out of ice frozen ground / With no one around to tweet it / While I bathe in cliffside pools / With my calamitous love and insurmountable grief,” she sings, which seemingly represents how she’s kept their relationship more private.

She also addresses her time in the spotlight: “Is it romantic how all of my elegies eulogize me? / I’m not cut out for all these cynical clones / These hunters with cell phones,” she declares.

William Bowery seems to be Joe‘s pseudonym as no one could find any information on that name. Learn more about the fan theory here!

Taylor Swift's Fans Think 'William Bowery' Is Actually Joe Alwyn's Pseudonym

Taylor Swift says that two of the songs on her new album Folklore were co-written by someone named William Bowery, but fans think this is a pseudonym for someone special in her life!

The 30-year-old singer announced the surprise album on Thursday morning (July 23) and she mentioned on Instagram, “I wrote and recorded this music in isolation but got to collaborate with some musical heroes of mine.”

Taylor said that she wrote two songs with “William Bowery,” but fans can’t find any information about someone with that name. He’s also the only writer to not be tagged in the Instagram post. There seems to be a connection between the name and Taylor‘s longtime boyfriend Joe Alwyn though!

Joe‘s great-grandfather was named William Alwyn and he was a composer, conductor, and music teacher. Also, Taylor and Joe have previously stayed at the Bowery hotel in New York City. Perhaps they combined those two names into a pseudonym?!

Taylor has some history with using pseudonyms and she famously used one for this project in 2016.
