Washington Redskins Are Reviewing Their Team Name After Years of Controversy & Backlash

The Washington Redskins are reconsidering their team name.

After years of fielding requests to do so, the owner of the team said on Friday (July 3) that the NFL team is launching a review of its name.

The news also comes as sponsor FedEx announced on Thursday (July 2) that they requested the team to operate under a different name.

“In light of recent events around our country and feedback from our community, the Washington Redskins are announcing the team will undergo a thorough review of the team’s name. This review formalizes the initial discussions the team has been having with the league in recent weeks,” they said in a statement, via Variety.

There is no further information regarding a timeline or a guaranteed change of name, but it’s significant because the request was declined for years, despite the slang reference to Native Americans that the team uses facing significant backlash for being offensive.

“This process allows the team to take into account not only the proud tradition and history of the franchise but also input from our alumni, the organization, sponsors, the National Football League and the local community it is proud to represent on and off the field,” said owner Dan Snyder.

Roger Goodell Admits NFL Was Wrong for Not Listening to Players, Will Encourage Peaceful Protests

Roger Goodell, the commissioner of the NFL, is speaking out on racism in America and how the NFL was wrong for not listening to players earlier.

Colin Kaepernick was the quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers for six seasons and he began protesting against racial injustice and police brutality by kneeling during the national anthem. He became a free agent after the 2016 season and went unsigned. Colin hasn’t played football since then and he filed a grievance against the NFL, though he withdrew it after reaching a confidential settlement with the league.

Now, Goodell admits the league should have listened to players about racial injustice.

“It has been a difficult time for our country, In particular, black people in our country,” Goodell said in a new video. “First, my condolences to the families of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmuad Arbery and all the families, who have endured police brutality.”

“We, the National Football League, comdemn racism and the systematic oppression, of black people. We, the National Football League, admit we were wrong for not listening to NFL players earlier, and encourage all to speak out and peacefully protest. We, the National Football League, believe Black Lives Matter. I personally protest with you and wanted to be part of the much-needed change in this country,” he added.

Goodell continued, “Without black players, there would be no National Football League. And the protests around the country are emblematic of the centuries of silence, inequality and oppression of black players, coaches, fans and staff. We are listening. I am listening. And I will be reaching out to players who have raised their voices and others on how we can improve and go forward for a better and more united NFL family.”

NFL Players DeAndre Baker & Quinton Dunbar Accused of Armed Robbery, Arrest Warrants Issued

NFL players DeAndre Baker and Quinton Dunbar are wanted by the police after being accused of armed robbery at a party in South Florida.

Arrest warrants have been issued for Baker, a 22-year-old cornerback for the New York Giants, and Dunbar, a 27-year-old cornerback for the Seattle Seahawks.

Both men are wanted on four counts each of armed robbery with a firearm. Baker is also being accused of four counts of aggravated assault with a firearm, according to the Associated Press.

The incident reportedly happened at a cookout at a home in Miramar, Fla. on Wednesday night (May 13). A fight broke out and Baker pulled out a handgun, according to the arrest warrant. Witnesses allegedly told investigators that “Baker, Dunbar and two other men began robbing other people at the party of thousands of dollars in cash, watches and other valuables.”

Detectives believe that the robbery was planned because the men left in vehicles that “were parked in a way that would make it easy to leave quickly.”

The New York Giants said, “We are aware of the situation. We have been in contact with DeAndre. We have no further comment at this time.”

The Seattle Seahawks said, “We are aware of the situation involving Quinton Dunbar and still gathering information. We will defer all further comment to league investigators and local authorities.”

“We know that we’re dealing with a different environment. And obviously, public safety will be number one on our mind, but we believe that we’ve been able to make modifications, the draft was a great example” he shared. “We’re able to make changes to the way we operate, to do it in the environment that we’re in, and do it that our fan and our participants’ safety is number one.”

Roger continued that a schedule is being worked on right now and fans could see a firm schedule in place in about two weeks.
