Nia Vardalos and Ian Gomez are addressing their divorce in a joint statement obtained by JustJared.com.

“We’ve been respectfully separated for a lengthy period of time,” Nia and Ian say. “Our relationship became a friendship so the decision to end the marriage is completely mutual and amicable. It is our hope that decency will prevail on the reporting of this story which will soon be yesterday’s news. Thank you for respecting our privacy.”

It was announced on Tuesday (July 3) that Nia filed for divorce after listing their separation date as June 29, 2017, after 24 years of marriage.

Nia and Ian share an 11-year-old daughter, Ilaria Vardalos Gomez, whom they adopted in 2008. She is asking for joint legal and physical custody of their daughter.

The couple married back in 1993 – which helped inspire her hit film My Big Fat Greek Wedding.

The My Big Fat Greek Wedding star filed for divorce from Ian on Tuesday (July 3) and their date of separation is listed as June 29, 2017, according to The Blast.

Irreconcilable differences was listed as the reason for the split. Nia and Ian got married in 1993 and they have one adopted daughter together.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding was inspired by Nia‘s relationship with Ian, who starred in the movie as John Corbett‘s best man. She went on to write both a sequel and a short-lived TV spinoff series.

Ian starred in all six seasons of the show Cougar Town.

Earlier this week, Kate and her ex Alexander Skarsgard reunited after the 2018 Met Gala.

Charlize Theron walks the black carpet at the premiere of her new movie Tully on Wednesday night (April 18) at the Regal LA Live Stadium 14 in Los Angeles.

The 42-year-old Oscar-winning actress went glam in a black dress covered in metallic butterflies for the event.

Nicole Kidman is all smiles while hitting the stage at the Casting Society Of America’s 2018 Artios Awards held at The Beverly Hilton Hotel on Thursday evening (January 18) in Beverly Hills, Calif.

The 50-year-old Big Little Lies star presented her longtime agent Kevin Huvane with the Lynn Stalmaster Award for Career Achievement, recognizing his contributions to the industry. The honor is named after the first casting director in history to win an honorary Academy Award.

Also in attendance at the Beverly Hills event were Brittany Snow, host Tig Notaro and her wife Stephanie Allynne, Rachel Bloom, Geena Davis, Amy Landecker and Nia Vardalos.

The awards were handed out in simultaneous ceremonies in Los Angeles and New York, where Ansel Elgort, Luke Wilson and more attended.
