Tyler Perry Donates to Breonna Taylor's Boyfriend Legal Defense Fund

Tyler Perry is helping out Breonna Taylor‘s boyfriend.

The 51-year-old TV and film mogul made a $100,000 donation to help Kenneth Walker‘s legal defense, Deadline reports.

Breonna, a Black woman who was an EMS, was killed by police officers while she slept in her home in Louisville, Kentucky earlier this year.

In October, one of the officers involved in the shooting – Jon Mattingly – sued Kenneth for assault, battery, and emotional distress for shooting the officer in the leg during the botched raid.

A GoFundMe page was then set up on Kenneth‘s behalf to help raise funds for the legal battle against Mattingly. With Tyler‘s donation, the page has raised over $102,000 so far.

“It’s outrageous for one of the men partially responsible for all that, to sue the man who endured it,” the GoFundMe page reads. “The raid that killed Breonna Taylor was poorly conceived, nightmarishly executed, and hastily covered-up. The subsequent grand jury proceedings were farcical and staged. Daniel Cameron’s statements were disingenuous, at best. Jon Mattingly’s lawsuit is the nearly-unbelievable next step in this ongoing mockery of justice.”

Back in September, a Kentucky grand jury only indicted one of the four officers involved in Breonna‘s death.

Tyler Perry Shares Powerful Message About Diversity While Accepting Governors Award at Emmys 2020 - Watch Now!

Tyler Perry is the recipient of the Governors Award at the 2020 Emmy Award.

The 51-year-old director, producer, and writer took to the stage during the virtual ceremony on Sunday (September 2) to accept the honor.

In his acceptance speech, Tyler shared a family story about his grandma giving him a quilt, that had a major significance in his life.

“When I was about 19 years old, I left home and my grandmother, she gave me a quilt that she had made,” Tyler recalled. “And this quilt was something I didn’t really care for. It had all these different colors and these different patches in it. And I was quite embarrassed by it. I had no value in it at all.”

Years later at an antique store, Tyler came across a similar quilt. The salesperson then told him a story about the quilt, which came from a freed slave woman.

“I became so embarrassed,” Tyler admitted. “Here I was, a person who prides myself on celebrating our heritage, our culture, and I didn’t even recognize the value in my grandmother’s quilt. I dismissed her work and her story because it didn’t look like what I thought it should. Now, whether we know it or not, we are all sewing our own quilts with our thoughts, our behaviors, our experiences, and our memories.”

Tyler continued, “I stand here tonight to say thank you to all of the people who are celebrating and know the value of every patch, and every story, and every color that makes up this quilt that is our business, this quilt that is our lives, this quilt that is America.”

“Because in my grandmother’s quilt, there are no patches that represented Black people on television,” Tyler concluded his speech. “But in my quilt, her grandson is being celebrated by the Television Academy. I thank you for this. God bless you.”

Tyler Perry Is 'Hollywood's Newest Billionaire,' According to Forbes

Tyler Perry is a billionaire!

The 51-year-old entertainer was named “Hollywood’s newest billionaire” by Forbes in a feature on Tuesday (September 1).

PHOTOS: Check out the latest pics of Tyler Perry

Here’s how it breaks down: “[Tyler Perry] owns the entirety of his creative output, including more than 1,200 episodes of television, 22 feature films and at least two dozen stage plays, as well as a 330-acre studio lot at the edge of Atlanta’s southern limits. He used that control to leverage a deal with ViacomCBS that pays him $150 million a year for new content and gives him an equity stake in BET+, the streaming service it debuted last September,” the outlet reported.

Forbes estimates Perry has earned more than $1.4 billion in pretax income since 2005, which he used to buy homes in Atlanta, New York, Los Angeles and Jackson Hole, Wyoming, as well as two planes. Quite a lifestyle for a once-homeless playwright raised in poverty in New Orleans. Today, Forbes estimates his net worth at $1 billion, with a clear path to future membership in The Forbes 400.”

“I love when people say you come from ‘humble beginnings.’ [It] means you were poor as hell. Ownership changes everything,” Tyler said.

“You got to understand, I had no mentors. My father doesn’t know anything about business, and my uncles and mother, they know nothing about this. I didn’t go to business school. Everything I’ve learned, I’ve learned in progress.”
