Matthew McConaughey to Reprise the Role That Kicked Off His Career!

Matthew McConaughey is taking on the role that helped to propel his career!

The 51-year-old actor is set to star in HBO’s limited series A Time for Mercy, the sequel to the classic John Grisham novel A Time To Kill, Deadline reported on Thursday (March 18).

25 years ago, Matthew starred in A Time To Kill in the role of defense attorney, Jake Brigance.

According to the report, the series would be 8-10 episodes with Lorenzo di Bonaventura, who was a Warner Bros. executive when A Time to Kill was greenlit in the 1990s, to produce.

Here’s more on the story: “The original novel was set in Clanton, Mississippi and followed a fearless young lawyer as he defends a black man accused of murdering two white men who raped his ten-year-old daughter. The case turned the small town into a boilerplate of tension that includes the inciting violent retribution and revenge from the Ku Klux Klan. The novel was another Grisham hit and Warner Bros. quickly moved to turn the book into a movie, tapping the late Joel Schumacher to direct and setting an A-list cast to star in the film.”

The film is considered to be one that put Matthew on the map in Hollywood, who was a relative unknown at the time.

Here’s a plot summary for A Time For Mercy: “Brigance finds himself embroiled in a deeply divisive trial when the court appoints him attorney for Drew Gamble, a timid sixteen-year-old boy accused of murdering a local deputy. Many in Clanton want a swift trial and the death penalty, but Brigance digs in and discovers that there is more to the story than meets the eye. Brigance’s fierce commitment to saving Drew from the gas chamber puts his career and the safety of his family on the line.”

A Time For Mercy is the third book to feature the Brigance character, following Sycamore Row, which was released in 2013.

“There was never a discussion to adapt that book but when Grisham made it be known that a third Brigance novel was on its way in 2020, McConaughey was drawn to the idea of returning to the role that helped launch his career,” the outlet reported.

“As for the decision to go the limited series route rather then make it into a film, the decision was made to allow the whole story to unfold and dive deeper into all the characters involved in the book rather then cut corners in a two hour movie.”

No director is attached to the project yet, nor any writers. A production start time is still to be determined.

Matthew also teased the possibility of doing this next in his career.

Matthew McConaughey Shares the Story Behind His 'Titanic' Audition

Matthew McConaughey is sharing some new details about auditioning for Titanic!

During an interview on Rob Lowe‘s podcast Literally with Rob Lowe, the 51-year-old actor opened up about the audition process for the 1997 James Cameron film, which he wrote about in his new book Greenlight.

“So I went and read with Kate Winslet and it was not one of the auditions—they filmed it so it was like into screen test time,” the Interstellar star shared. “After we left, you know, it was one of those ones where they, like, followed me and on when we got outside they were like, ‘That went great.’ I mean, kind of like hugs. I really thought it was going to happen.”

Despite the seemingly successful audition, Matthew was never offered the role. The actor added, “For a while I was saying like, ‘Who was my—I gotta find that agent. They’re in trouble. I did not ever get the offer.”

Matthew would later go on to star alongside Titanic’s leading man Leonardo DiCaprio in the Martin Scorsese film Wolf of Wall Street.

“He wants you to win,” Matthew said of Leo. “Not everyone is like that. They don’t want you to win.”

'The Wedding Planner' Almost Starred These Two Actors Instead of Jennifer Lopez & Matthew McConaughey

It turns out that Jennifer Lopez and Matthew McConaughey weren’t the original actors that the studio had wanted to star in The Wedding Planner.

Adam Shankman, who directed the movie, opened up in a new interview to celebrate the flick’s 20th anniversary about who was originally slated to star.

When the film was in the very beginning stages, and associated with the now defunct Fine Line Features, Minnie Driver was set as Mary Fiore.

“Fine Line was trying to get into more of a commercial market, and they really liked this script,” Adam shared. “The plot was essentially the same, but it was going to be a very low-budget indie movie.”

However, the movie with Minnie didn’t get off the ground and then, other A-list stars then, including Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. were also circling the project.

“Those actors were people who were talked about, but no one was ever officially cast.”

Jennifer was ultimately cast in the project as Mary. However, the role of Dr. Steve Edison was still vacant and that’s when Adam turned to Brendan Fraser.

“I had been working with Brendan a lot as a choreographer — we did everything from George of the Jungle to Mrs. Winterbourne together. So I talked to him, and he was in,” he says. “But then he switched agencies while we were negotiating, and the new agency pulled him out of our movie and into Bedazzled.”

He went on, “That was a really dark day for me, because we were a month-and-a-half away from starting rehearsal and we had sold the movie on Jennifer and Brendan.”

The only actor available to join the movie was Matthew, who was the best choice in the end as he and Jennifer “got on like wildfire.”

“I have never seen two people who, on the surface, are more different than Jennifer Lopez and Matthew McConaughey, but they were absolutely adorable together,” Adam added. “They had very different processes, but they allowed each other the space and freedom to work those processes.”

Jennifer Lopez & Matthew McConaughey Reminisce About 'The Wedding Planner' During Zoom Reunion

Jennifer Lopez and Matthew McConaughey have virtually reunited to reminisce about The Wedding Planner for its 20th anniversary.

The two actors, who played Mary and Steve in the romantic comedy, shared compliments of each other over their Zoom reunion.

“You said, ‘Miss Lopez, I’m going to kiss you now.’ And I said, ‘OK, let’s do it. Let’s hit it,’” Jennifer recalled to him. “When you do these movies…we’ve been lucky enough to continue doing what we love, there’s certain moments that always stick out in your head.”

She added that she “enjoyed working with you. We had such a nice rapport and chemistry. We were somewhat at the beginning of our careers at that time. It was exciting to be working on any movie. I still feel that way. It was a magical time. I’m such a romantic too that working on those types of movies have a real feel for me.”

“In a way, [The Wedding Planner] was the last of the rom-coms,” Matthew mused. “The rom-com doesn’t get made anymore…”

“We did Monster-In-Law after we did Wedding Planner,” Jennifer noted, reiterating his thoughts about the genre. “That was a lot of fun, that was that era. But you’re right. Now I’m about to do another one, I have one in the can, I’m about to do another one.”

“I wanna know there’s a happily ever after, I wanna know that. Even though we know we’ve lived through a tough year, miracles still happen, love prevails, things can go right, for sure.”

Jennifer and Matthew first reconnected about the film last year, and here’s what they said about reteaming for a third time…
